A&M and Missouri Play to 1-1 Draw
Oct 29, 2015 | Soccer
COLUMBIA, Missouri – The Texas A&M Aggies and Missouri Tigers played to a 1-1 tie through 110 minutes of action at Walton Stadium in the regular-season finale Thursday evening.
The draw prevented Missouri (9-4-5, 7-2-2 SEC) from claiming a share of the regular-season title as Florida claimed the outright crown with 25 points on an 8-2-1 league ledger.
Missouri had the two best scoring opportunities in the extra time, but reserve goalkeeper Danielle Rice stonewalled the Tigers to stave off defeat. In the 102nd minute, Mizzou had a corner kick that resulted in a pair of shots inside the 6-yard box, but the first shot off the head Candace Johnson found the left post and the follow-up shot by Melanie Donaldson was punched away by Rice. A third shot from distance sailed over the goal.
With 6:02 remaining in the second overtime, Candace Johnson had a penalty kick opportunity but Rice guessed the right way and made the save to keep the game-winner off the board.
Rice, who relieved starter Mia Hummel in the 69th minute, made four saves in the match as she played 41 scoreless minutes.
Texas A&M (13-5-1, 6-4-1) broke the scoring seal in the 52nd minute. Mikaela Harvey weaved through multiple defenders on a charge down the center of the pitch. Twenty-five yards out she slotted a ball to Ally Watt on a run to the PK spot. Watt beat the Missouri keeper to the right for her fifth goal of the season
The Tigers scored the equalizer in the 63rd minute. Kaitlyn Clark worked the ball down the left flank and sent a cross into the box where Reagan Russell put a flying head on it from six yards, slipping it between the keeper and the left post.
The first half was a defensive tussle with the teams working hard to get off a combined nine shots. Missouri owned a 5-4 edge in shots and a 4-0 advantage in shots-on-goal. The corner kicks were tied at 1-1.
Missouri found the net in the 43rd minute off the secondary action on a corner kick, but the shot was waved off as Aggie goalkeeper was steamrollered after getting her paws on the initial shot.
The Aggies return to action Wednesday, November 4 when they play the No. 3 seed Ole Miss in the quarterfinal of the SEC Tournament in Orange Beach, Alabama. First touch is slated for 2:35 pm.
