Trio of Aggies Open Singles Play Thursday
TULSA, Oklahoma – Texas A&M men's tennis advanced a doubles team to the ITA All-American Main Draw at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center in Tulsa, Oklahoma Wednesday afternoon. Sophomore Jordi Arconada and junior Max Lunkin advanced to Thursday's Main Draw with a pair of wins Wednesday afternoon.
Arconada and Lunkin defeated No. 56 Fedor Baev and Strong Kirchheimer of Northwestern Wednesday in three sets to advance to a showdown against Andreas Bjerrehus and Joso Monteiro of Virginia Tech. The maroon and white duo took set one in a tiebreaker before dispatching of the Hokie pair 6-3 in the second set. Arconada and Lunkin are set to face No. 13 Mac Styslinger and Thai-Son Kwiatkowski Thursday afternoon. Lunkin advanced to the Main Draw of the 2014 ITA All-American alongside AJ Catanzariti.
As the singles Qualifying Draw finished up Wednesday, the winners advanced to the Main Draw beginning on Thursday. A trio of Aggies, Catanzariti, Arthur Rinderknech and Shane Vinsant, will begin singles play in the Main Draw. A season ago, then-freshman Catanzariti stormed through both pre-qualifying and qualifying to advance to the Main Draw en route to an impressive freshman campaign.
No. 55 Catanzariti will take on Mitchell Pritchard of Tulsa, No. 35 Vinsant will face No. 96 Korey Lovett of Alabama and No. 53 Rinderknech will take on No. 32 Mikael Torpegaard of Ohio State Thursday. Singles quarterfinalists, doubles finalists and consolation champions will receive an automatic entry into the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships on Nov. 12-15, held at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows, New York.
