Freshman Duo Scores Four Goals in Triumph over Alabama
Oct 09, 2015 | Soccer
COLLEGE STATION, Texas – Texas A&M freshmen Emily Bates and Ally Watt came off the bench to score two goals apiece, leading the No. 17 Aggies to a 4-0 win over the Alabama Crimson Tide at Ellis Field on Friday evening.
It marked the first multiple-goal effort for both of the Aggie rookies.
With the win, the Aggies improved to 11-3-0 overall and 4-2-0 in SEC play. The victory catapulted the Maroon and White past Kentucky and Missouri in the SEC standings and into a second-place tie with Auburn at 12 points apiece. Both squads sit four points behind first-place South Carolina (16 pts – 5-0-1 SEC)
The Maroon and White extended their home unbeaten string to 16 matches, improving to 15-0-1 over the span, including their current 13-match win streak at Ellis Field.
The victory also guaranteed the Aggies' their 23rd consecutive winning season.
Three other freshmen made their mark on the scoresheet as Kate Hajdu and Margaret Schmidt each assisted on a goal and Mia Hummel made three saves in goal for her second consecutive shutout.
The Aggies drew first blood in the 24th minute. The goal came less than 30 seconds after Watt entered the contest. The mercurial freshman possessed the ball 30 yards out on the left side and charged through the Crimson Tide defense. At 15 yards out she sent a low driving ball to the right post, where a sliding Abby Lutzenkirchen tried to keep the ball from crossing the goal line, but to no avail, giving Watt her second goal of the season.
Bates, who missed the last four matches with a leg injury, entered the match in the 29th minute. She needed less than seven minutes to do damage. Karlie Mueller sent a ball into the six-yard box from 35 yards out on the left. The ball took one bounce and Bates poked with her right leg from four yards out past the keeper.
Texas A&M took a 2-0 lead into the intermission, holding advantages in shots (11-5), shots-on-goal (4-1) and corner kicks (2-0)
The Maroon and White kept the offensive pressure going in the second half. In the first eight minutes coming out of halftime, the Aggies had five corner kick opportunities.
The Crimson Tide played the last 17:54 down a player as Chatham DeProspo was shown a yellow card in the 62nd minute and a second yellow and the subsequent red card in the 78th minute.
Bates struck with her second goal in the 78th minute. Kate Hajdu controlled the ball at the top of the penalty arc and dumped a ball off to Bates on the left side. She took two dribbles towards the penalty spot and uncorked a shot from 15 yards out inside the left post for the 3-0 edge.
The Aggies capped off the scoring on a corner kick opportunity in the 86th minute. Kristi Leonard sent the service in from the right arc. The offering deflected off Margaret Schmidt and went to Watt who sent it to the back of the net from 6 yards out on the left for the 4-0 advantage.
Texas A&M left a few goals on the field as Mikaela Harvey tattooed the crossbar in the seventh minute, Brittany Crabtree hit the left post in the 59th minute and Claudette Lassandro smashed the crossbar in the 62nd minute.
For the match, the Maroon and White held huge advantages in shots (25-11), shots-on-goal (13-3) and corner kicks (9-2).
The Aggies return to action on Sunday when they head to Alabama for a 2 pm match with the No. 8 Auburn Tigers.
TEXAS A&M QUOTES
Head Coach G Guerrieri
On Emily Bates performance…
"That's exactly the kind of impact Emily Bates has been making every game that she's played. Having her back makes us a little bit more like the Texas A&M that teams can fear. I thought, even though she's playing with limited time, she was super in her impact on the game."
On Ally Watt's performance…
"Today she used her abilities. Instead of just being a threat, she was the real deal. She was the id that scored goals. Instead of looking like someone that could be great, she was great."
On the team's improvement on finishing shots…
"Thirteen shots on goal is quite a few. If you think about it, the Alabama goal keeper made some amazing saves. I was real pleased with our desire to finish and technique of all of our players that forced out their goal keepers to make the save or kick the ball to the back of our net."
On A&M's goalkeeper Mia Hummel…
"All three of the goal keepers have played very well in training. Mia has been just a nose ahead. Tonight, she wasn't really called up on to do that much, but she made a huge save their on the one corner kick. That was a similar ball that we were scored upon at Georgia a couple weeks ago. So really pleased for her that she was able to keep her concentration."
Freshman forward Ally Watt
On scoring two goals in the match…
"Honestly, both of my goals were just team effort and if it wasn't for whoever assisted me and the buildup from the team we wouldn't have those goals.
On the upcoming match against Auburn…
"I'm excited, I know the team's excited. We're ready to go. We're going in strong and hopefully we come out with the results we want."

On scoring two goals in the match…
"My teammates made it really easy for me with the great cross by Karlie [Mueller] and the perfect ball by Kate [Hajdu]. I had the easy part of just passing it into the goal."
On rebounding with two 4-0 wins after the two losses…
"I'm really glad because it's really putting us in a good place for the SEC Tournament at the end of the year, and then the NCAA Tournament. After those two rough losses we've really turned it around and we're back on track."
