COLLEGE STATION, Texas – The Farmers put up five runs in the final inning to register a, 6-4, come-from-behind win over the Plowboys in the opening game of the Omaha Cup Maroon and White Championship Series on Tuesday evening, a 7-inning affair.
Â
JB Moss led the Farmers' offense, going 2-for-4 with one home run, two runs and three RBI. Ryne Birk put up solid numbers at the plate in a losing effort, batting 3-for-4 with two doubles, one run and two RBI.
The starting pitchers registered solid performances for both squads, but neither were left with a decision. For the Farmers, Vinson worked 4.1 innings, allowing two runs, one earned, on five hits and one walk while striking out three. Kyle Simonds worked 6.0 innings for the Plowboys, yielding one run on two hits and one walk while striking out five.
Trailing 2-0 in the top of the sixth inning, JB Moss hit a leadoff home run off Simonds to cut the Plowboys' advantage to one run.
Â
The Farmers carried the momentum into the next inning with Ty Schlottmann on the mound. With one out, Michael Barash drew a walk and Cole Bedford singled through the left side of the infield. Tristan Metten loaded the bases with a walk. Austin Homan appeared to bounce into a game-ending double play, but it was mishandled by the shortstop, sending Barash home with the tying run. Lee May Gonzalez replaced Schlottmann on the bump and uncorked a wild pitch to allow the go-ahead run to score. Moss added a two-run single and Joel Davis tacked on a run with a single to inflate the Farmers' cushion to 6-2.
Â
The Plowboys tried to close the gap in their final at-bat, but came up short. An RBI double by Birk and an RBI triple by Boomer White had the Farmers sweating, but Ryan Hendrix closed out the game by getting Nick Banks to strike out swinging and Hunter Melton to pop up to first.
Â
First blood was drawn by the Plowboys in the bottom of the first. A one-out single by Birk and two-out double by Banks put two runners in scoring position and Birk came home to score on a fielding error on a sharp grounder by Melton.
Â
The Plowboys added a run in the fifth with an RBI single by Birk, plating Trey Jimmerson who reached with a leadoff single.
Â
Game two of the Omaha Cup Championship Series is slated for Thursday at 3:30 pm.

On the game…
"It was certainly an exciting game at the end. But I think at the front end, the two starting pitchers, Andrew Vinson and Kyle Simonds, were outstanding. Then just like that, a guy who hasn't had a great day, striking out twice, JB Moss gets a home run in the sixth to cut the lead in half and then drives in two the with a single in the next inning. But the Plowboys didn't quit. They had some good at-bats and forced us to go to the bullpen a second time in the last inning. It was a very competitive game."
