COLLEGE STATION, Texas – The Plowboys earned a 7-1 win over the Farmers on Thursday, earning enough points to clinch the Omaha Cup.

As has become tradition under head coach Rob Childress, the Aggies have spent the fall competing internally for the Omaha Cup, a staple of the Texas A&M baseball culture. The event features the Aggies being split into different teams (Farmers and Plowboys) which compete against one another both on-and-off the field in order to sharpen the competitive nature and chemistry of the squad.

The Plowboys drew first blood in the top of the first inning. Ryne Birk reached on a one-out double and came home to score on a sacrifice fly by Boomer White.

Birk helped spark a rally again in the third inning. With one out, the junior reached on a two-base error and stole second base. After White drew a walk to put runners on the corners, Nick Banks plated Birk with a single. A balk pushed both runners into scoring position and Hunter Melton plated two with a double to centerfield, staking the Plowboys to a 4-0 lead.

In the top of the fifth, Birk reached on a leadoff single and came around to score on a groundout by Melton for the Plowboys' 5-0 advantage.

Birk drove in a run in the sixth inning. Jonathan Moroney drew a leadoff walk and moved to second on a single by Alan Campero. After a pair of strikeouts, Birk plated Moroney with a hit, giving the Plowboys a 6-0 lead.

The Farmers broke the scoring seal in the home half of the sixth. With one out, JB Moss singled and Blake Kopetsky followed with a double to put two in scoring position. A wild pitch allowed Moss to score, but Stephen Kolek dealt a couple of strikeouts to slam the door.

The Plowboys closed out the scoring in the seventh. Banks drew a walk to start the final raps. He moved to second base on a groundout by Dayne Sommer and came around to score on a single by Moroney.

Birk and Banks led the Plowboys at the plate with three hits apiece. Birk hit 3-for-4 with one double, three runs, one stolen base and one RBI. Banks hit 3-for-3 with two runs and one RBI. Melton batted 1-for-4 with three RBI.

Moss paced the Farmers, going 2-for-3 with one run.

Tyler Stubblefield earned the win for the Plowboys, allowing one run on four hits and one walk while striking out five in 5.1 innings.

The Aggies wrap up fall practice with the final game of the Omaha Cup Maroon and White Championship Series at 3:30 pm on Friday.

TEXAS A&M QUOTES

Head Coach Rob Childress
On the game…
"I'm extremely proud of the Plowboys. It was certainly a complete game by them today. It started on the mound with Tyler Stubblefield, who was outstanding, and they played great defense and came up with big hits. They had the big inning with three runs, but kept the offense going with runs in each of the last three innings to extend the lead."

On the Plowboys winning the Omaha Cup…
"The Plowboys are the Omaha Cup winners for the Fall of 2015. They took care of their business on the field, off the field, in the classroom and certainly in the Championship Series. That was a big win for them today to put themselves over the top pointswise and ensuring the Cup was decided on the last day.
