Volleyball Holds off Ole Miss for Ninth Consecutive Victory
Nov 13, 2015 | Volleyball
OXFORD, Miss. – Texas A&M extended its win streak to nine and climbed back into a tie for first place in the Southeastern Conference standings after holding off a pesky Ole Miss team, 26-24, 17-25, 25-19, 23-25, 15-12, tonight at the Gillom Sports Center.
The Aggies, who moved to 12-0 in the all-time series against the Rebels, improved to 18-6 overall and 11-2 in SEC matches to ascend to a tie with Kentucky, which had a bye today. Ole Miss drops to 20-8 overall, including 6-7 in league play.
For the fourth time in A&M's five visits to Ole Miss, the match was decided in a fifth set. The Rebels had used a 3-0 run to take a 7-6 lead in the final stanza and held an 8-7 advantage when the teams changes sides. A&M managed to tie the score twice before a block by Jazzmin Babers and Ashlie Reasor returned the lead to A&M, 10-9. Ole Miss countered with a kill and a block to regain the lead and maintained the one-point advantage at 12-11 before the Aggies reeled off four unanswered points. Junior outside hitter Emily Hardesty began the run and evened the score at 12-12 with a kill, and Reasor swiped a kill off the Rebels block to give the Aggies a 13-12 lead. Ole Miss' next attack sailed long, and libero Amy Nettles aced her serve to close out the victory.
Sophomore outside hitter Kiara McGee led the Aggies with 19 kills, one shy of her career-high. Senior middle blocker Shelby Sullivan added 13 kills while hitting .417, and she tied her career high with seven blocks. Redshirt junior middle blocker and reigning SEC Player of the Week Jazzmin Babers, who entered the match leading the SEC in hitting percentage, also reached double-figure kills with 12 but was held to a .179 hitting efficiency.
Sophomore Stephanie Aiple, the four-time reigning SEC Setter of the Week, tallied her team-leading sixth double-double with 50 assists and 10 digs for the Aggies. Nettles and Hardesty, who both drew praise from A&M head coach Laurie Corbelli, tied for team-high honors in digs with 13 apiece, and junior defensive specialist Katelyn Labhart tied her season-high with 10 digs.
Nakeyta Clair led the Rebels with 17 kills and also tallied a team-high six blocks as Ole Miss outblocked A&M, 15-10.
A&M got off to a slow start as Ole Miss used a 7-1 run in the opening set to build a 17-11 cushion. But just as they have done several times this season, the Aggies chipped away at the lead, using a 7-2 run to get within 20-19. A&M eventually tied the score for the first time since 9-all on a kill by Hardesty to even the score at 22-22. The teams then exchanged points, with a kill by Kate Gibson putting the Rebels at set point, 24-23. Following an A&M timeout, Sullivan got a kill on the slide attack to tie the score, and the Aggies took the lead on the next play as Ole Miss hit into the net. Aiple then closed out the set with a kill.
A&M outhit Ole Miss, .282 to .176, in the first frame, but the Rebels outhit A&M, .273 to .132, in the second set en route to evening the match at a set apiece. The Maroon and White opened the second set by taking 3-1 lead, but it would be their only lead as the Rebels had three consecutive kills to take the lead. A&M tied the score three times, the last coming at 10-10 before Ole Miss began to pull away, and the Aggies were unable to make a comeback.
The third set was knotted at 15 before a Sullivan kill began an 8-1 run by the Aggies, who outhit the Rebels .143 to .057. The teams began to trade points until back-to back attack errors by the Rebels closed out the 25-19 win for the Aggies, who took a 2-1 lead in the match.
A&M used a 5-0 surge to take an 11-9 lead in the fourth set. Ole Miss, which outhit A&M .135 to .105 in the frame, came back to tie the score at 15-15, before the Aggies outscored Ole Miss, 6-2, to build their largest lead at 21-17. A&M, which was outhit .135 to .105, held a 22-19 lead before Ole Miss charged back, tying the score at 22 and 23 before taking the lead at 24-23 as A&M's attack sailed wide. Claire then put down a kill to secure the win for the Rebels and send the match to the fifth and deciding set.
A&M outhit Ole Miss, .195 to .177 for the match, leading in kills, 66 to 56. A&M also led in digs, 61-56, and the Rebels led in blocks, 15-10.
A&M, which improved to 5-0 in five-set matches this season, concludes its two-match road swing Sunday as the Aggies take on Mississippi State in Starkville. First serve against the Bulldogs is at 1 p.m. at the Newell-Grissom Building in Starkville, Miss., and the match will be broadcast on SEC Network +.

Texas A&M post-match quotes:
Texas A&M Head Coach Laurie Corbelli:
On her thoughts on the match…
"It wasn't our prettiest game, that's for sure. But it doesn't have to be pretty all the time. You just have to find ways to win at the right times - win rallies, win sets. The ups and downs were just really wearing on the team. It showed up on our offense. I thought our defense just decided to get grittier and more and more determined and helped us get that win. I thought Emily Hardesty was just a rock star. They served her all night long; she had to block; she had to hit; she got aces on a new serve that she's using. She was just really, really unbeatable tonight. They tried to break her down and they just couldn't do it. I thought Amy Nettles was fantastic defensively, and also at the end there when it just came down to getting the win in the fifth set she was in charge of getting the serves to a certain spot at a certain pace and she did it beautifully. A lot of times that's a situation where kids just don't happen to come through and she was a rock star. (That match) wore us all out. Everyone is exhausted, but what a great win by the Aggies, just showing a lot of grit.
