COLLEGE STATION, Texas - The stellar Aggie pitching staff propelled Texas A&M to a doubleheader sweep of the Sam Houston State Bearkats at the Aggie Softball Complex Sunday afternoon. Trinity Harrington and Samantha Show both pitched complete game shutouts, with scores of 9-0 and 5-0 respectively. The twin bill wrapped up the fall schedule for A&M before the Maroon and White series begins on Monday.
The Aggie offense got off to a slow start in game one, unable to manufacture any hits in the first three innings. The lack of base hits did not keep the maroon and white off the scoreboard, after a couple free passes and five stolen bases plated senior Cali Lanphear in the second frame.
Harrington was dominant throughout the contest, allowing a leadoff single to start the game but would only give up another baserunner in her complete game effort. The sophomore fanned seven Bearkats and captured another win on the fall.
The bats came alive in the fourth as the Aggies put a six-spot on the board. The first three runs were scored on an error, walk, and a single before Lanphear stepped to the plate. The A&M right fielder made it 7-0 with a three run blast to deep left-center, finishing the two games 3-for-3 with three runs and a walk.
Freshman Riley Sartain joined the party with a bomb in the 5th scoring, sophomore Kristen Cuyos from second. Sartain's homerun capped off the scoring in game one.
The second half of the double header saw freshman pitcher Samantha Show go up against Tayler Atkinson from Sam Houston. Show gave up a few baserunners in the first, but was near untouchable afterwards. The freshman retired 17 batters in a row from the first through the seventh, striking out six and only giving up three hits.
Atkinson was tagged for one unearned run in the third after Sartain rounded scored after reaching via an error. Cuyos, senior Breanna Dozier, and Lanphear all scored in the fourth, forcing the Bearkats to change pitchers. Kenndi Fisher threw the final three innings for Sam Houston, allowing just one run on sac fly from sophomore Haley Rebar.
The Aggies outscored the Bearkats 14-0 in the two games, outhitting them 16-5. Cuyos reached base safely in 4-of-5 plate appearances scoring three runs on the day.
Texas A&M finished the fall campaign a perfect 8-0 outscoring their opponents 104 to 3 with 6 shutouts. Next up for A&M is the Maroon and White Series beginning Monday and will be free to the public at the Aggie Softball Complex. On the two shutouts…
"I thought our pitchers were the two stars of the day. They got ahead of hitters; their pitch count was really low. No walks on the day, so I'm always happy about no free passes. They were in control the entire time, to throw two shutouts against a division one team who you know was coming gunning for you, I was pleased with our performance on defense and on the mound. Offensively we didn't put up the numbers that we would expect to. I thought our kids fought hard and when we needed some runs they made it happen."
On maroon and white series…
"I want to see us compete. The biggest thing to me is get out there and be hungry, attack offensively, as well as turn it around offensively. Hope to get settled in there and get some good at bats and start driving the ball. For me mostly it is go out there and compete at the highest level. I told our players that this maroon white series, the team you play is going to be the best team you have seen all fall. I want us to raise the bar and really get after it."
