Texas A&M women's basketball announced the signing of Rakell Spencer (New Orleans, La./Cabrini) to a National Letter of Intent on Wednesday. Spencer signed a National Letter of Intent on Nov. 18, but did not announce her decision publicly until Dec. 3. She will enroll in time for the 2016-17 season.
"Rakell fits right into what we want to do at Texas A&M, which is to play pressure basketball defensively and offensively for 40 minutes," said Texas A&M head coach Gary Blair. "She comes from a small Catholic school, Cabrini, which is steeped in traditions and Core Values, just like Texas A&M."
Spencer, a 5-11 off-guard, is rated as the 25th-best player at her position by ESPN HoopGurlz.
"She was extremely well-coached in high school by Nancy Walsh and her summer coaches were very good as well," said Blair. "She is particularly interested in the Huffines Institute's Coaching Academy at Texas A&M that Dr. John Thornton directs, and the benefits that come with that certificate."
Spencer, a two-time all-state selection, has scored over 1,700 points in high school. She averaged 15.0 points and 10 rebounds as a junior, and was a New Orleans All-Metro selection by the Times-Picayune. The Times-Picayune also named her the New Orleans Metro Area Female Athlete of the Week on Mar. 4, after scoring 19 points against No. 12 Peabody and a triple double (23 points, 15 rebounds, 10 blocks) against Bastrop to reach the 4A State Semifinals.
As a sophomore in 2013-14, she averaged 13.7 points, 10.4 rebounds, 3.0 steals and 3.5 blocks per game, and reached the regionals of the state playoffs, earning an all-metro honors by the New Orleans Advocate.
Additionally, Spencer was a middle blocker for Cabrini's state runner-up volleyball team, and earned all-state honors the past two seasons.
