Kirk and Murray Named to All-SEC Freshman Team
Dec 10, 2015 | Football
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Texas A&M wide receiver Christian Kirk and quarterback Kyler Murray were named to the All-SEC Freshman Team, as selected by the SEC head coaches, the conference announced on Thursday.
Kirk, a wide receiver and return specialist, set a new Texas A&M freshman single-season record for all-purpose yards, passing the total of 1,542 set by Cyrus Gray in 2008. The Arizona native's season total of 1,659 yards ranks fifth in school history behind Gray (1,806, 2010), Darren Lewis (1,739 in 1990 and 1,705 in 1988) and Leeland McElroy (1,709 in 1995).
Kirk is 65 receiving yards shy of 1,000 for the season, to go along with his 45 rush, 341 punt return and 348 kick return yards. The Arizona native paced the Aggies with eight touchdowns on the year, six receiving and two punt return. Kirk was the first Aggie with multiple punt return touchdowns in a single season since Aaron Glenn in 1993.
Murray who hails from Allen, played in nine games for the Aggies this fall and finished with 686 passing yards and 335 yards on the ground. The dual-threat quarterback ended the regular season with five touchdowns through the air and one rushing. Murray started games against South Carolina, Auburn and Western Carolina in his rookie campaign.
Murray, the 2014 National Gatorade Player of the Year, garnered national recognition following his 379-yard total offense performance against the Gamecocks, earning the Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award National Player of the Week. The SEC followed with Freshman of the Week honors as Murray became the first Aggie quarterback to rush for 100-plus yards in his first start and first player to pass for 200 and rush for 100 in a game at Texas A&M since Heisman Trophy winner Johnny Manziel in 2013.
Texas A&M has accepted a bowl invitation to the Franklin American Mortgage Music City Bowl in Nashville, Tenn., and will face off against Louisville of the Atlantic Coast Conference in Nissan Stadium on Dec. 30.
