Dr. Jeff Guin, the Associate Athletics Director for Academics at Texas A&M University, joined the staff in August of 2015. Recently, he spoke with 12thman.com on why he decided to come to Texas A&M and what he likes best about the school.

"I think what drew my family and I is similar to what everyone feels when making the decision to come to Texas A&M," notes Guin. "The traditions on this campus are like none other, sense of community, and love we all have with a college town atmosphere."

Jeff has been working within college athletics for 18 years now. He spent eleven years coaching in Men's Basketball, along with seven years in student-athlete academic support.

"One of the greatest strengths our staff in the Nye Academic Center possesses is our diverse backgrounds and experiences," adds Guin. "We have some that have worked with student-athletes for over 20 years, and we have some who are only a few years removed from their own 'college days'."

The entire staff strives to have all their athletes succeed to the best of their ability.

Jeff says the staff at Nye Academic Center has built relationships with their student athletes that will not only last for the four to five years they are students, but for a lifetime.

"The opportunity to see these men and women come in as 18-19 year old freshmen and then you see them grow and mature over the course of their time here right before your eyes," remarks Guin. "There is a unique bond that forms with academic support staff and student-athletes due to the daily interaction, and the best is when they come back to campus to share with you all their experiences and success they are having in their life after college."

One of the most enjoyable times for Jeff is Ring Day at Texas A&M.

"The joy and excitement our student-athletes as well as all students exhibit when they receive their Aggie Ring is awesome," states Guin. "It is the symbol of joining one of the most impressive and influential networks in the country… the Aggie Network! We know the hard work they have all put into their academics up to that point, so for them to reach the ultimate goal of earning their degree is what brings enjoyment and pride to our staff."

When asked about the goals he has for his student athletes Guin responded, "Our goals for all of our Aggie student-athletes are simple. We want them all to earn their degree, have as much success in their respective sport as possible, and to leave Texas A&M with all the social and professional skills necessary to enter the 'real world'! What we mean by that last part is that our students understand how to pursue their dreams and a career. They understand how to construct a resume and cover letter. They feel comfortable in an interview and understand the value of networking and promoting their 'personal brand' via social media. In all, we want what is best for our Aggie student-athletes and to provide the platform, resources and support to insure they have the opportunity to pursue their dreams."

Jeff has been "blown away" by the traditions here at Texas A&M.

"I have either attended or worked at five other institutions and none of them come close to the traditions here," acknowledges Guin. "From Midnight Yell to the 12th Man, Silver Taps, Aggie Ring and Ring Day, the Elephant Walk, Aggie Muster and Reveille… it just really makes College Station a great place to be., and it shows by how many alumni come back and visit and how many are working here now!"
