COLLEGE STATION—Texas A&M student-athletes are posting impressive numbers in the classroom to go along with record-setting success on the various fields of play. In the fall of 2014, 300 student-athletes eclipsed a grade-point average of 3.0 while 40 posted a perfect 4.0 and the average GPA for an Aggie student-athlete was 2.904.
“Academic achievement and athletics success does not have to be mutually exclusive,” Aggie Director of Athletics Eric Hyman said. “For our 583 student-athletes enrolled in the fall of 2014, I am pleased with their accomplishments, but what pleases me most is their desire to achieve more.”
Five teams posted over a combined 3.0 grade point with softball leading the way with a 3.258 grade point in the fall. Head coach Jo Evans has the softball team ranked in the Top 25 and reached the NCAA post-season for the 13th straight year in 2014.
Equestrian, led by head coach Tana McKay, posted a 3.241 and is currently ranked No. 6 in the country while the soccer team finished third with a combined 3.216 GPA. Led by head coach G. Guerrieri, the soccer team reached the NCAA College Cup after sweeping the SEC regular season and tournament championships.
The other two programs with a combined GPA of 3.0 or more was women's swimming and diving (3.134), currently ranked No. 4 in the country, and women's tennis (3.068), currently ranked No. 18.
“We have finished in the Top 10 of the Directors' Cup for the past five years with unprecedented success on the athletics fields of play,” Hyman explained. “But more important than the athletic success is the overall development of our young people. Our Texas A&M student-athletes are representing the core values of Texas A&M, taking an active role in the community and achieving success in the classroom and that bodes well for a promising future.”
The student-athletes who achieved a 3.0 or better in the fall semester were named to the Athletics Director Honor Roll and will be recognized at halftime of the men's basketball game on Saturday, Feb. 28 against Auburn.
