#25 Softball Faces Top Ranked Florida on the Road
Apr 23, 2015 | Softball
COLLEGE STATION, Texas – The No. 25 Texas A&M softball team (34-14, 9-9) hits the road this weekend to take on No. 1 Florida, with the first pitch of the series coming at 5:00 p.m. on Friday. For the conference play portion of the season, @AggieSoftball will be releasing our #KeysToTheSeries weekly feature, including position battles, dominant streaks, hits, pitches and everything in between to get you ready for the weekend.
Scouting Florida: The Gators are coming off a 5-0 victory over rival Florida State and went 2-0 in Oxford, taking a weather shortened series from the No. 14 team in the country. The Aggies own a 4-7 mark in games on the road heading into the weekend.
Strength in the Circle: Both bull pens enter the series with strong pitchers going the distance for their ball clubs. Senior Rachel Fox and junior Katie Marks have combined to pitch 27 complete games in 2015. The Aggies have been utilizing their entire bullpen, with senior Lauren Ainsley coming on in relief against Mississippi State and sophomore Abby Donnell playing incredible in relief to earn two victories in back-to-back weekends. Freshman Kayla Ober made great progress in her most recent relief appearance against LSU, allowing just one hit in two innings of work and holding the Tigers scoreless in consecutive innings for the first time on the weekend. The Gators will throw Lauren Haeger and Aleshia Ocasio at the Aggies this weekend, who have combined to be the pitcher of record in 39 games, with 25 complete games between the two. The pair both boasts impressive ERAs, 1.15 and 1.61 respectively, and have fanned 277 batters over 240.1 innings of action. Whichever bull pen stays consistent and plays to their strengths will hold the edge over the other.
Stepping Up to the Plate: The Aggies have several players who are coming up with big hits exactly when the ball club needs it. Against Mississippi State, junior Breanna Dozier came on to hit with A&M trailing by one and propelled the Aggies to a 10-8 victory over the Bulldogs. Dozier earned her keep against South Carolina, coming up big in the first of Sunday's doubleheader with her second walk-off home run in as many weeks. Sophomore April Ryan crushed the team's first walk-off homer of the season in Texas A&M's SEC home opener against Kentucky. A quick flare from freshman Erica Russell, who reached on a throwing error, gave junior Cali Lanphear time to race towards home for the winning run in the bottom of the tenth inning in the marathon outing against the Gamecocks. Most recently, freshman Tori Vidales went yard twice in the same inning as A&M handed Auburn it's only run-rule loss of the season. Ryan notched her fifth dinger and first grand slam of the weekend in the win over Lamar. Freshman Kristen Cuyos lifted the Aggies over LSU in the series finale with a three-run bomb in the top of the seventh. The Texas A&M bats will have to stay strong throughout the lineup and on the bench to stay on top of a team averaging over seven hits and runs per game.
Maintaining Momentum: The Aggies enter the series playing red hot on offense, with A&M's batters hitting multiple home runs in four of the last five outings. In games where the Aggies go yard at least once, their record is 15-3. This past weekend, the ballclub went 1-1 when outhitting the Tigers, where they are 25-4 overall when able to connect with the ball more than their opponent. With the potency of the Florida offense, A&M will have to make contact as hard and often as possible to out-gun the Gators.
Power of the Youth: The ball club has been propelled through the beginning of the season by several new faces and younger players. The Aggies lost a great deal of experience and leadership with the 2014 class but the newcomers have stepped into their roles quite nicely. Of the 47 home runs so far this season, 24 have been hit by freshmen and 34 have been hit by underclassmen. The batting order typically features six underclassmen at the start of each game. Most of the hitting statistics categories are either led by or filled with underclassmen, with sophomore April Ryan and freshman Tori Vidales being featured among the top three in all but one offensive category. As the younger players get more experience under their belt, the quality at-bats and strong defensive play exhibited so far this season will be critical to defeating Florida.
