Trio of Aggie Golfers Earn PGA Tour Cards
Sep 01, 2015 | Men's Golf
NORTH PLAINS, Ore. – The list of Aggies competing at golf's highest level continues to grow as a trio of players who donned the Maroon & White – Martin Piller, Shane Bertsch and Bronson Burgoon – have each earned their PGA Tour membership card for the 2015-16 season.
The trio joins former A&M golfers Bobby Gates, Jeff Maggert and Ryan Palmer on the PGA Tour, bringing the total number of Aggies who hold a PGA Tour card to six.
Bertsch (1991-92) and Piller (2005-08) each garnered all-conference honors during their time in Aggieland, with Bertsch named All-Southwest Conference in 1991 and Piller selected All-Big 12 in 2007.
Burgoon (2006-09), meanwhile, earned All-America accolades in both 2007 and 2009 while playing a major part of the biggest moment in Texas A&M men's golf history. To cap off an outstanding senior season, Burgoon hit a 125-yard gap wedge from the rough to within three inches of the 18th hole at Inverness Golf Club in Toledo, Ohio, to win his match and clinch the 2009 NCAA Division I men's golf title for the Aggies.
The PGA has now issued the first group that includes 25 of 30 available cards for the upcoming season. An additional 25 cards will be on the line at the four-event Web.com Tour Finals, which begin next Thursday (Sept. 10) with the Hotel Fitness Championship in Fort Wayne, Ind. These second 25 cards will be based on money earned solely in the Finals.
Earlier this month across the Atlantic, former Texas A&M golfer Nacho Elviera claimed victory at the ROLEX Trophy at the Golf Club de Genève to earn immediate promotion to the European Tour, where he will play alongside another Aggie, Andrea Pavan.
