Texas A&M Sweeps WSU in Home Opener

COLLEGE STATION, Texas – Texas A&M opened the home portion of its schedule today with a convincing 25-12, 25-16, 25-12 victory over Wichita State at Reed Arena.
A&M (2-1) hit .470, the sixth highest hitting percentage in a match in program history, and held the Shockers (3-3) to .092. Aggie senior middle blocker Shelby Sullivan led all players with 14 kills while hitting at a .765 clip. Sophomore outside hitter Kiara McGee also posted double-digit kills with 10 as A&M led WSU 45-27 in total team kills. Sophomore setter Stephanie Aiple directed the Aggie offense, posting 38 assists in the victory.
Defensively, A&M sophomore libero Amy Nettles led all players with 10 digs, and Sullivan and junior middle blocker Jazzmin Babers had four blocks apiece to lead the Aggies to a 10-1 block advantage over the Shockers.
Katie Reilly, the daughter of A&M two-time All-American and Texas A&M Athletics Hall of Fame member Sherri (Brinkman) Reilly, led WSU with nine kills while hitting .471.
Aggie freshman opposite hitter Kaitlyn Blake drew the first start of her career and was part of a quartet of A&M players with three kills apiece in the opening frame. A&M never trailed in the opening set, hitting .500 while holding WSU to .000. The Aggies used an 8-2 run to close out the stanza, with junior outside hitter Emily Hardesty getting the setting-winning kill.
The Aggies jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the second set and continued to pull away, outhitting the Shockers, .484 to .241. Sullivan put the Aggies at set point with her ninth kill of the set, and WSU committed an attack error on the ensuing play to end the set and put A&M up, 2-0, heading into the intermission.
A&M continued to dominate in the final frame despite Sullivan leaving the match with an injury after putting the Aggies up, 6-4. Hardesty had four kills and a solo block during a 10-3 rally that put the Aggies up, 16-8. A&M continued to pull away, and after WSU served long to put the Aggies at match point, Babers put down an errant WSU overpass for the clinching point.
WSU finishes the Texas A&M Invitational, 1-2. The Aggies return to the court today at 4:30 p.m. to take on Abilene Christian and close out the tournament Sunday with a 1 p.m. meeting against New Mexico State, which is 2-0 in the tournament after a thrilling 3-2 come-from-behind victory over WSU Friday evening.
