Aggies in Sixth after John Burns Opening Round

Freshman Chandler Phillips stands just four shots off the lead as the Texas A&M men's golf team opened play at the 2016 John Burns Intercollegiate on Wailua Golf Course Wednesday.

KAUAI, Hawai'I – Freshman Chandler Phillips stands just four shots off the lead as the Texas A&M men's golf team opened play at the 2016 John Burns Intercollegiate on Wailua Golf Course Wednesday.

In the team standings, Texas A&M (292, +4) holds the sixth spot on the 17-team leaderboard trailing Texas, Cal, Washington State, Arizona and Hawaii.

"I'm pretty pleased with how the boys played today," Texas A&M head coach J.T. Higgins said. "The wind was really moving off the ocean and it made it tough to gauge you distances and have complete control of your golf ball, but I thought the guys handled it pretty well and put together a solid round."

Phillips (71, -1) started his round on No. 9 and quickly got off to a hot start, notching birdies on three of his first six holes. The Huntsville, Texas, native ended the day in a six-way tie for 10th place

"Chandler played great again, he's really getting the hang of this and it's been fun to watch," Higgins said. "He's such a competitor and fighter."

Meanwhile, senior Adria Arnaus (73, +1) stands in a tie for 26th after one round, while Cameron Champ (74, +2) and Ben Crancer (74, +2) are a shot back with a share of 34th.

Rounding out the A&M lineup was senior Andrew Lister (79, +7) in a tie for 81st, a position he shares with fellow Aggies Jake Goodman (79, +7) and Dylan Siebenaler (79, +7) who are participating as individuals.

Also competing was sophomore Connor Black (78, +6) who ended the day in 69th.

"We had a couple holes we didn't play very well and we didn't really take advantage of the par-5s, but other than that I thought we showed some really good resiliency and really battled," Higgins added. "I really like the progress we're making and hopefully it keeps building as the week goes."

The Aggies return to the course for the event's second round on Thursday morning, teeing off with golfers from Hawaii, Kennesaw State and New Mexico beginning at 8:30 a.m. local time. Live scoring and results can be found on golfstat.com as well as live updates via twitter at @aggiemensgolf.
