LAFAYETTE, La. (AP) – The Texas A&M men's golf team sits in second place, just one shot off the lead, at the Louisiana Classics heading into Tuesday's final round at Oakbourne Country Club. Texas A&M trails only top-ranked Illinois on the team leaderboard.
"The guys played great today," Texas A&M head coach J.T. Higgins said. "This was an outstanding team effort, top to bottom, with everybody turning in at least one round under par."
The Aggies (278-281=559, -17) were tied for second with Kansas in the 12-team field (278-285=563, -13) after Monday's opening round round and trailed the Illini (277-281=558, -18) by a single stroke. In the evening, the Aggies matched Illinois' seven-under par score to stay within a shot of the leaders.Â
"I can't say enough about the guys," Higgins said. "We were great off the tee and kept the ball in play all 36 holes. I thought we chipped and putted well and that gave us a lot of opportunities."
The Maroon & White were led by senior Adria Arnaus (68-70=138, -6) who is tied atop the individual leaderboard with Thomas Detry of Illinois. Arnaus' brilliant day began in the morning session with a string of four straight birdies on holes three through six that shot him to the top of the player standings. The Barcelona, Spain, native will be gunning for his first tournament win on Tuesday to best his second place finish at the Talis Park Challenge in 2015.Â
"Obviously, Adria is continuing to play great golf and leading the tournament," Higgins added. "Two really solid rounds for him and we had guys right behind him in the top 15. Everybody is going a really great job and we're excited about the way we are playing."Â
Senior Ben Crancer (72-68=140, -4) finished the day with a share of seventh place followed by Chandler Phillips (67-75=142, -2) and Cameron Champ (71-72=143, -1) tied for 12th and 14th respectively. Phillips led the Aggies through the first round by carding a team-low 67. Andrew Lister (77-71=148, +4) rounded out the A&M lineup in a tie for 44th among the 78-player field. Â
Competing as an individual, sophomore Andrew Paysse (72-68=140, -4) posted a top-seven finish through the 36 holes including his low round as an Aggie with a four-under 68 in the evening.Â
