BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – For the third time this season, Texas A&M's Tyler Davis has been honored as SEC Freshman of the Week by the league office. This week, Davis shared the accolade with Kentucky's Skal Labissiere.
Â
A 6-foot-10, 265-pound center from Plano, Texas, averaged 15 points and seven rebounds in wins against Auburn and Vanderbilt to help the Aggies (24-7; 13-5 SEC) earn a share of the 2016 SEC Regular Season Championship. The title was the school's first since sharing the 1986 Southwest Conference crown.
Â
Davis fell just short of a double-double at Auburn, scoring 14 points while pulling down nine boards, including six on the offensive glass. Returning to the court against Vanderbilt, he turned in an all-around solid performance. Against the Commodores, Davis made 6-of-9 field goal attempts to finish with 16 points to go along with five rebounds, three blocks and two assists in the title-clinching affair.
Â
The A&M big man also earned SEC Freshman of the Week honors on Dec. 21 and Feb. 22.
Â
Joining Davis and Labissiere in receiving honors from the conference was Kentucky's Jamal Murray who was named SEC Player of the Week.
Â
The Aggies are Nashville-bound for the 2016 SEC Tournament which will be held at Bridgestone Arena March 9-13. Texas A&M will be the event's No. 1 seed and play its first game at the tournament on Friday, March 11, against the winner of Thursday's Arkansas-Florida match-up.
