Myrtle Beach, S.C. - The Texas A&M Men's Golf Team finished up play at the General Hackler Championship in 6th place at the Dunes Golf & Beach Club led by Sophomore Cameron Champ's third career top 10 finish.
Â
Heading into the final round, The Aggies (283-288-288= 859, -5) found themselves in the fourth slot among the packed fifteen-team field that included eight ranked opponents. The maroon and white finished the final round at even but were flirting with a fourth place finish until they shot a combined five-over on the eighteenth hole.
Â
"We played so well today through the first 15 holes." said A&M head coach J.T. Higgins. "We were making a charge up the leaderboard and everything was going pretty well, but then we really just finished poorly. I think everybody is pretty disappointed with that."
Â
Fellow Southeastern Conference opponent South Carolina easily secured the title posting a seven-stroke advantage over runner up Virginia (287-276-285=848, -16). The two schools boasted the two co-champions of the individual portion in Matthew Nesmith (73-67-67=207, -9) and Jimmy Stranger (70-66-71=207, -9).
Â
"Overall, it was a pretty strong showing," added Higgins. "I thought we played well but we also identified some weaknesses. Our wedge game has got to get a lot better for us to compete against the SEC and at the national championships. We've got a chance to work on those things and get better."
Â
Cameron Champ (70-72-71=213, -3) was the best individual finisher grabbing a share of ninth place moving up five spots Sunday. His final round day was an up-and-down affair, finishing with five birdies, five bogeys and six pars, along with an eagle on the 15th hole.
Â
Seniors Adria Arnaus (70-72-74=216, E) and Ben Crancer (70-74-72=216, E) finished at even par for the tournament. For Arnaus, it marked his fourth straight event with a par or better showing.
Â
Freshman Chandler Phillips (73-70-74=217, +1) was eyeing an under-par finish until a double-bogey on the final hole pushed him one over and into a share of 27th. Rounding out the A&M lineup Senior Andrew Lister (77-75-71=223, +7) jumped 14 spots on the leaderboard to a tie for 47th with an under-par final round.
Â
The team will enjoy spring break before heading to the Valspar Collegiate Invitational in Palm City, Fla. Play begins on Monday from The Floridian Golf Club.Â
