ATLANTA, Ga. – Texas A&M will be represented by four swimmers and divers at the 2016 NCAA Men's Swimming & Diving Championships, which will be contested Wednesday through Saturday at Georgia Tech's McAuley Aquatic Center.
Representing Texas A&M at the national meet will be sophomore swimmers Brock Bonetti and Mauro Castillo Luna (Zacatecas, Mexico), sophomore diver Tyler Henschel (Sherwood Park, Alberta, Canada) and freshman diver Sam Thornton (Baildon, United Kingdom). It will be Henschel's second trip to the NCAA Championships, while Bonetti, Castillo and Thornton are NCAA meet first-timers.
Bonetti, from Bakersfield, Calif., will compete in three races at the NCAA Championships – the 100- and 200-yard backstroke and the 200 IM. Bonetti has season bests of 46.43 in the 100 back, 1:42.75 in the 200 back and 1:46.42 in the 200 IM. Bonetti is Texas A&M's record holder in the 200 backstroke with a time of 1:42.11 from 2015 and he ranks No. 2 in school history in the 100 back and No. 3 in the 200 IM.
Castillo Luna, from Zacatecas, Mexico, will also compete in three race at nationals – the 100 and 200 breaststroke and the 200 IM. Already this season, Castillo Luna has set school standards in the 100 breaststroke (52.65) and the 200 breaststoke (1:53.64) and his 200 IM season best of 1:46.25 ranks No. 2 in school history.
Henschel, from Sherwood Park, Alberta, Canada, will compete in the one- and three-meter springboard dives, as well as the platform dive. Henschel owns season bests of 364.70 in the one-meter dive, 388.80 in the three-meter and 398.80 in the platform dive. At last year's meet, Henschl was 33rd in the one-meter, 38th in the three-meter and 19th on the tower.
Thornton, from Baildon, United Kingdom, will also compete in all three diving disciplines at the NCAA meet. Thornton owns season bests of 405.00 in the one-meter dive, 415.81 in the three-meter and 317.35 in the platform dive. At the SEC Championships last month, Thornton won the three-meter crown and was third in the one-meter.
