A&M's Shaina Burns leads heptathlon through first day at UTSA Invitational

SAN ANTONIO – Brisk winds amid a clear sky greeted the multi-event competitors on the first day of the Ricardo Romo Invitational hosted by UTSA. Texas A&M's Shaina Burns currently leads the heptathlon while in the decathlon Aggie Ben Zook is in third place.
 
As the decathlon and heptathlon continue on Friday at 11 a.m. in the UTSA Park West Athletics Complex, throwers will be in action starting at 2 p.m. with the women's hammer and men's shot put, followed by the men's hammer and women's shot put.
 
Burns leads the heptathlon with 3,089 points over a pair of athletes from UTSA, Gabby Torres (2,649) and Tameyah Carrol (2,494). On Friday Burns will conclude the heptathlon with the long jump, javelin and 800m.
 
Zook produced a score of 3,416 points through the first five events of the decathlon. UTSA's Adrian Riley leads the field of seven with 3,942 points while former Baylor Bear Henry Vildosola is runner-up with 3,766 points. Aggie Rodney Ripley, who had a no height in the high jump, has a score of 2,542 points.
 
Burns opened the heptathlon with a time of 14.64 seconds (5.9 wind) in the 100m hurdles to score 890 points. Burns then high jumped 5-4 ¼ (771) and had a 42-11 (733) mark in the shot put. In the 200m she ran 27.20 (5.2 wind) to score 695 points in the event.
 
Her first day score is ahead of the best first day tally Burns had from her freshman season in 2015, which was 3,017 in the USATF Junior meet.
 
Zook, who has a 200 point lead over Baylor's Hunter Powell (3,212) in fourth place, generated the second best performance in three of the events contested (100m, shot put and high jump) as Riley turned in the top marks for all five events.
 
An 11.12 (6.9 wind) in the 100 meters picked up 834 points for Zook, who then had a 19-4 ¼ (7.1 wind) long jump (565 points). A 39-6 (609) in the shot put was followed by a 6-1 ½ (687) high jump. Zook closed out the first day with a 52.09 (721) in the 400m.
 
Ripley's marks included an 11.34 (786) in the 100m, a 19-11 ½ (604) and 37-10 ¾ (579) in the shot put. Following a no height in the high jump Ripley ran 55.66 (573) in the 400m.
 
The second day of the decathlon concludes with the 110m hurdles, discus, pole vault, javelin and 1,500m.
