Burns wins heptathlon at UTSA, runner-up in throwing events for Ondrusek and Bartlett

SAN ANTONIO – A victory and a pair of runner-up performances highlighted Texas A&M's second day in the Ricardo Romo Invitational at the UTSA Park West Athletics Complex. Shaina Burns claimed the heptathlon while Alison Ondrusek and Jeff Bartlett each placed second in a pair of throwing events.

Saturday's action begins at 10 a.m. with the men's javelin, which features Sam Humphreys, a Texas A&M grad who won the 2012 Olympic Trials and 2013 NCAA title. Running events will be held from 2 p.m. to 6:45 p.m.
 
Burns won the heptathlon with 5,022 points, which moves her to No. 12 on the Aggie all-time list. Early into the outdoor season her score ranks fourth among collegians. Burns also bettered the facility record of 4,840 set by Natalie Thompson of Texas Tech in 2014. Runner-up to Burns was UTSA's Gabby Torres with 4,280 points.
 
Starting the second day of the heptathlon with the long jump, Burns encountered a pair of fouls before getting a leap of 16-11 ½ (606 points). In the javelin she threw 127-0 (642) and ended the multi-event with a 2:30.62 (685) in the 800m.
 
Ondrusek threw the hammer 193 feet, 1 inch (58.85) to secure second place, six inches from the winning mark of 193-7 (59.01) by TCU's Paola Miranda. Shelbi Vaughan finished sixth with a season opening toss of 168-9 (51.45) while Carissa van Beek had three fouls.
 
A mark of 56-6 ½ (17.23) for Bartlett placed second in the shot put, just an inch behind the winning mark of 57-6 ½ (17.26) by UTSA's Kelsey Benoit. Aggie multi-event athlete Nathan Hite placed 13th with a toss of 43-7 ¾ (13.30).
 
Ben Zook remained in third place through the conclusion of the decathlon, scoring 6,424 points to finish as the second collegian. Rodney Ripley moved up to sixth place with a final tally of 5,646 points.
 
Zook ran 15.64 in the 110m hurdles (774 points), threw 130-2 in the discus (658), vaulted 12-1 ½ (535), and hit a mark of 141-6 in the javelin (488). He ran a 4:55.35 in the 1,500m (587) to close out the event.
 
UTSA's Adrian Riley won the decathlon with 7,190 points, just eight points ahead of Henry Vildosola's 7,182. Finishing behind Zook were a pair of Baylor Bears, Chase Hood (5,893) and Hunter Powell (5,882).
 
In the women's shot put, A&M's Annie Kunz placed seventh with a mark of 41-7 ¼ (12.68). Austin Cook, competing unattached this season, placed second in the men's hammer with a throw of 198-6 (60.51).
