AUSTIN – Through the first day of the decathlon at the 89th Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays, Texas A&M's Daniel Martin has a score of 3,626 points and is currently in 12th place.

Martin started the decathlon with an 11.08 (3.1 wind) in the 100m for 843 points, and then added a windy long jump of 22-1 ½ (6.74) for 753 points. A mark of 35-2 (10.72) in the shot put picked up 529 points while a high jump clearance of 5-11 ¼ (1.81) earned 636 points.

Capping the day off with the 400m in the fifth event of the decathlon, Martin clocked 48.93 for 865 points.

His total of 3,626 points is the second highest point tally Martin has scored on day one of the decathlon, trailing only the 3,634 points he had last year on the way to winning the Shirley Crowe Multi-event held at Rice with a final score of 7,101 points.

Martin is in 12th place among a field 17. The first day leader, with 4,036 points, is Stanford's Harrison Williams. The rest of the top five scorers include Ingmar Vos (Netherlands) 3,976; BYU's Kevin Nielsen 3,932; Cody Thomas of Alaska Anchorage 3,930; and Purdue's Matthew Garrison 3,891.

In the first set of dual meet rankings for the outdoor season released this week by Track & Field News, the Texas A&M men are No. 1 and the Aggie women are No. 4. Both squads finished the indoor season ranked No. 1 in dual meet rankings.

On April 16, the Aggies will face UCLA in a dual meet at Drake Stadium on the Bruins campus. UCLA men are currently No. 2 and the women are No. 5.
