TORONTO --- SEC Freshman Swimmer of the Year Sydney Pickrem of Texas A&M qualified for a second event at the 2016 Olympic Games with a victory in the 200-meter IM at the 2016 Canadian Olympic Trials on Friday at the Toronto Pan Am Sports Centre.
Pickrem, from Dunedin, Fla., trailed by over a half-second at the 150-meter mark, but posted a blistering 31.24 on the final 50 freestyle leg to win in 2:11.81, which was well under the FINA "A" cut of 2:14.26. Pickrem owns the Canadian record of 2:10.08 from last year's World Championships. On Wednesday, Pickrem qualified for Rio de Janiero with a victory in the 400 IM.
The freshman is coming off a spectacular first season at Texas A&M where she won the SEC title in the 400 IM and earned first-team All-America honors in the 400 IM and 200 IM and with the Aggies' 800 free relay at the 2016 NCAA Championships.
