COLLEGE STATION, Texas – Two-time All-American Ross Stripling captivated the nation Friday evening as he became the 54th Aggie to reach the Major Leagues. In his first career appearance, Stripling took a no-hitter into the eighth inning at AT&T Park in San Francisco before being lifted at the 100-pitch mark.
Â
The Los Angeles Dodgers' 2012 fifth round draft pick went 7.1 hitless innings, allowing one run with four walks and four strikeouts. He was left with no decision in the contest as the Giants would win, 3-2, in 10 innings.
Â
With one out in the eighth inning and the Dodgers leading the Giants 2-0, Stripling issued a walk to Angel Pagan. Los Angeles manager Dave Roberts decided to go to his bullpen, calling on Chris Hatcher. The baseball gods were displeased and the next batter, Trevor Brown, hit a two-run home run to tie the game at 2-2. A walk-off home run by the Giants' Brandon Crawford in the 10th inning ended the game.
Â
Stripling, who had his trip to the majors sidetracked by Tommy John surgery two years ago, made 13 appearances at Double-A Tulsa last season, going 3-6 with a 3.88 ERA and 55 strikeouts over 67.1 innings. He earned the spot as the Dodgers' No. 5 starter in the preseason.
Â
The Southlake Carroll High School product earned All-America Second Team recognition from the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association in 2012. As a senior that year, he was 10-4 with a 3.08 ERA and 120 strikeouts over 125.2 innings in 16 starts. He worked five complete-games in 2012, including one shutout.
Â
Stripling was named All-America First Team by the American Baseball Coaches Association in 2011. He also earned All-America Third Team from NCBWA and Collegiate Baseball as a junior. He was 14-2 with four saves, a 2.29 ERA and 113 strikeouts in 24 appearances.
Â
During his career in College Station, Stripling logged a 31-11 record with four saves, a 3.13 ERA and 340 strikeouts. He ranks second on the Aggies' career list for innings pitched (353.2) and third for wins and strikeouts. He was a two-time All-Big 12 First Team choice.
Â
Stripling joins Tyler Naquin as Aggies to make their MLB debut this season. Naquin made a pinch-hit appearance for the Cleveland Indians in the season opener on April 5. The duo are the first Aggies to make the Major Leagues since Michael Wacha made his debut May 30, 2013. Stripling is the 14th A&M player to make a debut since 2000.
