Annie Kunz, Lindon Victor produce big scores on first day of multi-events

AZUSA, California – In their first multi-events of the outdoor season, Aggies Annie Kunz and Lindon Victor produced their best first day scores in the heptathlon and decathlon, respectively, during the Mt. SAC Relays/California Invitational combined events held on Wednesday.

Now each has an opportunity to challenge the Texas A&M school records of 6,022 points in the heptathlon and 7,931 in the decathlon when the competition continues on Thursday. Jena Hemann set the Aggie heptathlon record during the 2015 USATF Championship in Eugene, while Ricky Barker established the decathlon record during the 1991 U.S. Olympic Festival held in Los Angeles.
 
Thursday action at the Mt. SAC Relays will also include a trio of Aggies competing in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with Elliot Farris, Colin Stoeber and Ryan Teel, while Christian Farris is entered in the 10,000 meters.
 
Kunz produced a score of 3,654 points in the heptathlon and is currently second overall and the top collegian among a field of 51 athletes that started the event. She only trails professional Nia Ali, who totaled 3,712 points. Following Kunz is Chari Hawkins of Santa Barbara TC (3,503), Washington State's Liz Harper (3,383) and Maddie Buttinger of Altis (3,359).
 
Victor's first day score of 4,092 points leads the division of the decathlon he is competing in with a field that started with 18 entries. Trailing Victor are Tim Hopkins of Santa Barbara TC (3,895), Grand Canyon's Pierre-louis Ricou (3,869), Triston Sisneros of Colorado Mines (3,865) and Duke's Chaz Hawkins (3,740).
 
Starting the heptathlon with the 100m hurdles, Kunz equaled her career best of 13.67 seconds (0.4 wind) that she established this past weekend during the Sun Angel Classic and generated 1,026 points as she ran the second fastest time in the event, trailing only a 13.14 (1103 points) for Ali.
 
In the high jump Kunz cleared an outdoor best of 5-8 ¾ (1.75) for 916 points and added 749 points in the shot put with PR of 43-8 ¾ (13.33), which was the best mark of the competition. Closing out the first day of the heptathlon, Kunz ran the 200m in a career best of 24.19 (2.2 wind) for 963 points as she posted the second fastest time among the group.
 
Victor ran the 100m in PR of 10.87 (2.8 wind) for 890 points as he posted the second fastest time behind a 10.82 for Hawkins, who ran in the same heat. A long jump mark of 22-11 ¾ (7.00) with an aiding 2.7 wind added 814 points while a leading shot put effort of 50-2 ½ (15.30) picked up 808 points.
 
In the high jump Victor cleared 6-5 ½ (1.97) for 776 points, which was second best among the field, and then he clocked 50.23 in the 400m for 804 points to wrap up the first day.
