ORLANDO, Fla. – Texas A&M graduate student swimmer Tera Bradham has been awarded the NCAS PlayMaker of the Month for March in honor of her academic achievement and community service efforts, the National Consortium for Academics & Sports (NCAS) announced.
Bradham, from Round Rock, Texas, has used her athletic status to be a leader and volunteer in her community and internationally. She is a bilingual education volunteer at Southwood Valley Elementary school in College Station, focusing on hands-on learning and tutoring. Bradham has volunteered internationally providing disaster relief through construction projects, labor, and motivational speaking in Mexico, Guatemala, and Peru. She volunteers at a local school providing horsemanship education and sponsors international children and families through advocacy efforts, financial contributions, and letter writing.
Bradham is also very active on the Aggies campus. For the past two years, Bradham has participated in "Aggies CAN" food drive, "Aggies Move," an event that assist elementary students become more aware of health and wellness, "Hard Hats for Little Heads" helmet safety for children, "The Big Event," a community-wide service event for Bryan-College Station residents, and National STUDENT-Athlete Day activities on the Texas A&M campus.
Bradham is carrying a 4.0 grade point average in her Master's of Education program. She already has a Bachelor's degree in Spanish. In the pool, Bradham produced season-best times of 1:03.23 in the 100 breaststroke and 2:02.86 in the 200 IM.
Current student-athletes are nominated by their coaches, administrators, and teammates, they must carry a 3.0 grade point average, and they must be active participants in community/volunteer services and/or social change advocacy.
For 29 years, the mission of the NCAS has been to "use the power of sport to affect positive social change." We educate and empower individuals and organizations by inspiring values-based thinking leading to actions that promote social responsibility and equality. Through Dr. Richard Lapchick's leadership, the NCAS has improved college student-athlete graduation rates, advocates for issues of diversity that plague athletic organizations, and creates programs to affect social change in sports and society.
