Texas A&M's women's basketball team announced the signing of NJCAA All-American Walnatia Wright of Midland Junior College to a National Letter of Intent on Tuesday. Wright is to enroll at Texas A&M and is eligible to compete as a junior in the 2016-17 season.
Wright, a 6-2 post player originally from Augusta, Ga., had a breakout season in 2015-16, averaging 17.6 points and 9.7 rebounds for the Lady Chaparrals, which helped Midland JC to the Sweet 16 of the NJCAA Tournament. Wright was the Western Junior College Athletic Conference MVP in 2015-16, and was named conference player of the week on Feb. 2.
"Walnatia is another junior college player who will fit into our team very well," said Texas A&M head coach Gary Blair. "She is an inside scoring threat who will help us out at not only the five position, but also at the four position."
She is the No. 6 prospect at her position and the No. 17 junior college prospect overall according to the Collegiate Girls Basketball Report.
As a freshman in 2014-15, Wright averaged 9.5 points and 7.7 rebounds for Midland. During her junior college career, she scored 20+ points in 14 games, and had 28 games of double-digit rebounds.
Prior to Midland JC, she played for Butler High School in Augusta, Ga., where she also played softball, soccer and ran track.
Wright is the second player from Midland JC to join the Aggies in the past four seasons, after Achiri Ade (2013-15), who finished her career fifth in career rebounding average and helped the Aggies to the 2014 NCAA Elite Eight. Wright is the ninth junior college player to join the Aggies since Gary Blair was named head coach in 2003, a group that includes 2011 Final Four MOP Danielle Adams, Ade, and first team all-conference selection Tanisha Smith.
