COLLEGE STATION—In addition to having tremendous success on the various athletic fields of competition, the Texas A&M athletics teams are having success in the classroom as evidenced by the recent release of the NCAA Academic Progress Rate (APR) scores.
"I am very proud of our student-athletes and also proud of the academic support staff at Texas A&M," Aggie Director of Athletics Scott Woodward said. "We are achieving great success in athletics competition and in academics. The competition in the classroom at Texas A&M is challenging and our student-athletes have stepped up to that challenge."
The APR provides a real-time look at a team's academic success by tracking the academic progress of each scholarship student-athlete. This year's rates are based on data from the 2011-12, 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2014-15 academic years. The APR accounts for eligibility, retention and graduation and provides a measure of each team's academic performance.
"Division I student-athletes learn to balance playing a sport they love with the pursuit of a degree, and we honor their continued success in the classroom," NCAA President Mark Emmert said. "The APR data prove that students can achieve both academically and athletically. Supporting our students as they work toward graduation is a top priority of everyone involved in college athletics."
The Texas A&M volleyball team posted a perfect 1000 multi-year score and ranked among the nation's Top 10 percent.
Six of the Aggie programs including volleyball, men's basketball, men's cross country, men's swimming and diving, women's cross country and softball earned perfect single-year scores.
The Aggie men's basketball program, in addition to reaching the NCAA Sweet 16 Championships, had a multi-year score of 912 in the 2012-13 figures and improved to 974 for the 2014-15 reporting time table.
From the 2013-14 figures to this year's 2014-15 results, 10 Texas A&M athletics teams improved their scores and included women's golf posting its highest multi-year score in the past five years with a 992 score and men's track and field had its highest single-year score in the last five years with a 971.
