ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — The Aggie men's golf team ascended three spots up the leaderboard at the NCAA Albuquerque Regional on Tuesday afternoon, concluding the event's second round in fifth place.
Â
The gritty outing by Texas A&M (296-307=603, +27) put the Aggies in a position to advance out of the regional with a solid showing on Wednesday during the event's third and concluding round on UNM Championship Course. The top five teams in the regional's final standings move on to the NCAA Championship at Eugene Country Club in Eugene, Ore., May 27-June 1.
Â
"I'm really proud of our guys, they really hung in there and battled hard today," Texas A&M head coach J.T. Higgins said. "We got inside the number (of teams to advance) with one day to go. We want to continue to move up the leaderboard, so we'll need to battle hard tomorrow and punch our ticket to the national championship"
Â
Currently, Arizona State leads the pack at six-over par while TCU (+21), South Florida (+24) and Southern California (+26) round out the top four squads on the 14-team leaderboard. Just behind the Aggies, San Diego State (+29), tournament host New Mexico (+29) and Texas Tech (+31) remain in contention with 18 holes to play.
Â
Individually, a pair of Aggies own spots in the top 15 of the player standings as both sophomore Cameron Champ (75-75=150, +6) and freshman Chandler Phillips (71-79=150, +6) sit a six-over par and tied for 12th place. Champ surged up the leaderboard Tuesday, charging up 23 places after beginning the day in a tie for 35th.
Â
Seniors Adrià Arnaus (74-77=151, +7) and Andrew Lister (76-76=152, +8) also hold spots in the top 20, claiming ties for 18th and 20th, respectively, after 36 holes of competition.
Â
Meanwhile, senior Ben Crancer (77-81=158, +14) concluded the day in 52nd place.
Â
"It was tough out there today," Higgins added. "The wind was blowing steady all day with gusts up to 40 miles per hour, so the course played as difficult as I've seen it play and I've been coming here for 25 years. It was hard to putt and it was hard to get the ball close, so that's why the scores were so high today."
Â
The Aggies tee off their final round at the NCAA Albuquerque Regional Wednesday morning at 8:50 a.m. (CT) and will be paired alongside San Diego State and USC. Live scoring is available via Golfstat.com.
