EUGENE, Ore. — Representing the Texas A&M men's golf team as an individual, sophomore Cameron Champ will tee off during the stroke play portion of the 2016 NCAA Division I Men's Golf Championship on Friday morning at Eugene Country Club.
Â
Champ is slated to tee off his opening round at 11:12 a.m. (CT) Friday and will be paired alongside Ohio State's Tee-k Kelly and UC Riverside's Matt Lutz.
Â
The Aggies narrowly missed out on advancing to the NCAA Championship as a team, tying for fifth place at the NCAA Albuquerque Regional before falling to San Diego State in a one-hole playoff. Champ, meanwhile, punched his ticket to the NCAA Championship by standing out as the regional's top individual, finishing in a tie for seventh before besting Army's Peter Kim in a playoff to advance.
Â
"It's exciting for Cam to have the chance to play at the national championship, although, I know he'd rather be there with his teammates," Texas A&M head coach J.T. Higgins said following the conclusion of the regional. "I think this is the best amateur tournament in the world. The U.S. Amateur is obviously a big deal and it's an older event, but the NCAA Championship has a much stronger field. Everyone there is a great player and the competition is fierce."
Â
Champ, a native of Sacramento, Calif., appeared in 11 of Texas A&M's 13 events this season and ended play as A&M's top individual in three tournaments while leading the squad with a 72.77 scoring average in 30 rounds of competition. Overall, he has notched 11 rounds of par or lower and collected four top-10 finishes.
Â
Eugene Country Club will play at par 70 and 7,014 yards for the NCAA Championship. The stroke play portion of the tournament will feature a total of 54 holes of competition with one round schedule for each day this weekend.
