Texas A&M swimmer Sarah Gibson's breakthrough junior season and her perfect 4.0 grade point average were recognized as she earned a spot on the 2016 Academic All-America® first team, the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) announced on Thursday.

Gibson, from San Antonio, Texas, carries a perfect 4.0 GPA while pursuing a bachelor's degree in biomedical engineering. Additionally this season, Gibson was named to the SEC Honor Roll for a third straight year and is in line to earn Scholar All-America honors for a second consecutive season from the College Swim Coaches Association of America (CSCAA).

Gibson is currently gearing up for the U.S. Olympic Team Trials, which will be contested June 26 through July 3 in Omaha, Neb. Gibson has posted Trials cuts in five races – the 200, 400 and 800-meter freestyle and the 100- and 200-meter butterfly.

The 2015-16 collegiate season was a breakthrough campaign for Gibson as she won her first SEC individual title (in the 100-yard butterfly), earned NCAA runner-up honors (also in the 100 fly), broke two school records (100 fly and 200 free) and placed in the top 10 in seven races at the NCAA Championships. Gibson was named co-Team MVP at the Aggies' team banquet.

Gibson becomes the eighth female swimmer to earn first-, second- or third-team Academic All-America honors, joining Sandra Goeking (2nd team, 1985), Jennifer Guillory (1st team, 1996), Julia Wilkinson (3rd team, 2008; 2nd team 2010), Ella Doerge (3rd team, 2009; 1st team, 2010), Emily Neal (2nd team, 2009), Sarah Woods (2nd team, 2009) and Alyssa Conner (2nd team, 2012).
