Szeryk, Dow Have Strong Performances At Women’s Western Amateur Championship

Texas A&M junior Maddie Szeryk and incoming freshman Courtney Dow put in strong performances at the Women's Western Golf Association National Amateur Championship. Szeryk reached the quarterfinal and finished 7th, while Dow tied for 20th after winning her first match.

AKRON, Ohio- Texas A&M junior Maddie Szeryk and incoming freshman Courtney Dow put in strong performances at the Women's Western Golf Association National Amateur Championship. Szeryk reached the quarterfinal and finished 7th, while Dow tied for 20th after winning her first match.

Szeryk started the tournament with a 144 (+2) in two qualifying rounds, highlighted by a 1-under 70 on the first round at the Dayton Country Club, qualifying for the Round of 64 in match play tied for 10th.

Dow was just one stroke behind on the par 71 / 5,998-yard course, qualifying in a tie for 14th after shooting 69-75=175 (+3) in two rounds of qualifying.

Dow won her Round of 64 match against Hannabeth Owens, an incoming freshman at Eastern Kentucky, 5&4. In the following round, Dow battled American Athletic Conference Freshman of the Year, SMU's Brigitte Dunne for 18 holes, but lost the match on the first playoff hole.

Szeryk's run to the quarterfinal started with a victory on the first playoff hole against Sirene Blair, who plays college golf at San Diego State, then took down Mary Ellen Shuman of Georgia 2&1 in the round of 32.

Szeryk beat fellow Allen HS graduate, and current Georgia golfer, Jordy LaBarbera 5&4 in the round of 16, before falling to Sophia Schubert 1 Down in the quarterfinal.

Jillian Hollis, who plays college golf at Georgia, won the tournament.

The Women's Western Golf Association has sponsored a national amateur championship each year since 1901, making it the longest consecutively running women's amateur championship.
Texas A&M qualified for the NCAA Regionals for the 16th straight season, and finished the season ranked No. 25 by Golfstat.
