OMAHA, Neb. – Texas A&M sophomore Bethany Galat advanced through two rounds of swimming competition to reach tomorrow's women's 200-meter IM final at the 2016 U.S. Olympic Team Trials on Tuesday at the CenturyLink Center.
Galat, from Mishawaka, Ind., was sixth in the morning prelims in 2:13.65 and then qualified fifth in the semifinals with a time of 2:12.29. It was Galat's second Championship final berth of the meet after placing third in the 400 IM on Sunday. Sophomore teammate Kristin Malone had a big lifetime best in the morning session of the 200 IM to qualify 11th to the semifinals in 2:15.06 before finishing 16th in the semis in 2:16.12.
Aggie junior Sarah Gibson made a strong bid in the 200 free, advancing through the morning prelim as the No. 9 qualifier in 1:59.19 and finishing 14th in the semifinal in a time of 1:59.71. Gibson became the fourth Aggie to break the 2:00 barrier in the long course meters 200 free, joining Christine Marshall, Julia Wilkinson, Kristen Heiss and Sarah Henry. Henry, a senior in 2015, was the No. 9 qualifier in the 200 free semis and is the first alternate to Wednesday's final.
2012 Olympian Breeja Larson couldn't defend her 2012 Olympic Trials crown in the 100-meter breaststroke, placing fourth in a time of 1:07.53.
