EUGENE – Texas A&M senior Shelbi Vaughan advanced to the final of the U.S. Olympic Trials discus with the fourth-best mark of the qualifying round as she reached a distance of 197 feet, 1 inch (60.09) in front of an opening day crowd of 20,987.

Three other Aggies in action on the first day of the Olympic Trials did not fare as well. Donavan Brazier (800m), Fred Kerley (400m) and Jessica Beard (400m) were unable to advance past the opening rounds of their respective events.

Vaughan returns to action on Saturday for the final of the discus, which will start at 12:45 p.m. (CT). Only one competitor, Whitney Ashley, bettered the automatic qualifier of 200-1 (61.00) to the final with a toss of 200-8 (61.16). Stephanie Brown Trafton followed with a 199-5 (60.79) while NCAA champion Kelsey Card of Wisconsin had a 199-4 (60.74).

Another Saturday final includes Natosha Rogers in the women's 10,000m. Meanwhile, qualifying rounds will take place for Chase Wolfle and Audie Wyatt in the pole vault, Devin Bogert and Sam Humphreys in the javelin, Will Williams in the long jump and Jeneba Tarmoh in the women's 100m.

Brazier raced in the final heat of four in the 800m, where the top three automatically advanced to the semifinal along with the next four fastest times. Leading the field at 400m (54.05) and 600m (1:21.07), Brazier had plenty of company coming off the final curve.

Three runners moved past Brazier in the home stretch to secure the automatic positions. The trio included Clayton Murphy (1:47.61), Brandon Johnson (1:47.62) and Harun Abda (1:47.88). Brazier placed fourth in 1:48.13, but the final time qualifier was a 1:47.83. Also missing the semifinal round was Duane Solomon (1:48.71), who ran 1:42.82 to place fourth in the 2012 Olympics.

Beard's time of 52.52 in the women's 400m placed her fourth in the prelim heat and just missed the final time qualifier of 52.49. Kerley posted a time of 45.70 to place fifth in his heat of the men's 400m.
