The meet record was bettered twice during the competition, first by Curtis Thompson at 271-11 (82.88) on his opening throw and then by Olympic Trials winner Cyrus Hostetler with a heave of 273-1 (83.24) in round five. The previous record of 270-3 (82.39) was set in 2004 by Breaux Greer.

Thompson, the NCAA champion this year for Mississippi State, placed second in the competition but doesn't have the Olympic standard of 272-3 (83.00). Also missing the standard was Riley Dolezal in third place with a 261-4 (79.67) toss.

Advancing to the Rio Olympics as a member of the U.S. team are Sam Crouser, who placed fourth, and Sean Furey, who finished 11th.

Texas A&M currently has 11 athletes qualified for the Summer Games, which will be held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
