Lori Stephenson Elected to Methodist University Athletic Hall of Fame

COLLEGE STATION, Texas – Texas A&M soccer assistant coach Lori Stephenson was selected for induction into the Methodist University Athletics Hall of Fame the department announced on Thursday.

COLLEGE STATION, Texas – Texas A&M soccer assistant coach Lori Stephenson was selected for induction into the Methodist University Athletics Hall of Fame the department announced on Thursday.

 

Stephenson is one five named for the 2016 induction class. The 19th Hall of Fame Class will be honored during Methodist's Homecoming Weekend, Oct. 21-22 in Fayetteville, North Carolina.

 

A four-year starter, Stephenson was a member of the Monarchs' inaugural squad in 1984 and captained the team from 1985-87. She helped lead Methodist to three Dixie Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (now USA South Athletic Conference) Championships and a pair of NCAA Division III Championship appearances.

 

Stephenson was a two-time All-Dixie Conference First Team selection and earned All-America Second Team status in 1986. She was also honored as the North Carolina Female Athlete of the Year that season. Additionally, she was a two-time member of the Intercollegiate Soccer Association of America's Adidas Scholar-Athlete Team. In 2013-14, she was selected to the USA South 50th Anniversary Team. She still owns a share of Methodist's single-game assists record with four in a 1987 contest.

 

Entering her 15th season at Texas A&M, the Aggies have advanced to the NCAA Championship in each of her seasons on the staff, including 11 trips to the Sweet 16 and six appearances in the NCAA quarterfinals. During her 15 seasons, the Aggies have claimed eight conference regular-season crowns and six league tournament titles.

 

A 1984 graduate of Reid Ross High School in Fayetteville, N.C., Stephenson earned a bachelor's degree in biology and chemistry from Methodist in 1988 and later earned her master's degree in cellular and molecular biology from Roswell Park Cancer Institute at the University of Buffalo. 

 

Stephenson came to Texas A&M from Blinn College in Bryan, Texas, where she was an instructor of biology from 1999 to 2000. Stephenson was also a biology instructor at Methodist for the three previous years. 

While at Methodist College, Stephenson was named the interim head soccer coach in 1999. She was previously involved in the North Carolina and Region III Soccer Olympic Development Program (ODP), serving both organizations as head coach and assistant coach while living in North Carolina from 1986-90 and when she returned to the state from 1995-96. 

In addition to her duties with the A&M soccer team, Stephenson developed the Brazos Mystic '89 girls team from a recreational team to a South Texas Division I competitor. The Mystic '89 team won state championship titles in the Texas State Cup (2003), the President's Cup State Championship (2004, 2005), and were finalists in the Director's Cup Southern Region National Championship in 2005. 


The former Lori Silvasy is married to A&M soccer Associate Head Coach Phil Stephenson. The couple resides in College Station and has two children, Brittany and Christopher.
