COLLEGE STATION, Texas – The Texas A&M men's tennis team capped off an impressive summer circuit with an ITA Regional title at the Mitchell Tennis Center.
Seniors James Martell and Frankie Colunga picked up four wins in College Station to claim the 2016 Texas A&M ITA Summer Circuit doubles title. The maroon and white clad duo topped players from Pepperdine, Tyler Junior College, Texas Tech and Abilene Christian en route to the championship.
Joining Martell and Colunga with an impressive summer was Hady Habib, who featured for Lebanon in the Davis Cup. The incoming freshman went undefeated during matches in the elite international tournament. Habib topped opponents from Cambodia, Sri Lanka, Singapore, Qatar, Syria and China in 2016. The right-hander is 6-1 in singles matches and 3-1 in doubles action all-time in the Cup.
Junior All-American Arthur Rinderknech also had summer to remember. The Paris, France native claimed a quartet of wins in the Belgium F1 Futures to advance to his first career futures final. The stringy right-hander topped opponents from France, Chile and Belgium to advance to the clay court final. Rinderknech won a pair of qualifier matches in straight sets to advance to the main draw.
Sophomore Aleksandre Bakshi returned to his home country of Georgia to train and compete in the Georgia F2 Futures. The left-hander picked up a victory over Gabor Borsos of Hungary in three-sets on clay before falling to Ilya Vasilyev of Russia.
In addition to the Aggies returning for the 2016-17 season, former players Austin Krajicek and Jackson Withrow have made waves on the professional circuit. Withrow turned pro after reaching the 2016 NCAA Doubles Championship match alongside Rinderknech and has continued his impressive doubles play. The Omaha, Nebraska native has tallied wins at the USA F26 Futures, Binghamton Challenger, Winnetka Challenger and USA F23 Futures to go along with the doubles title at the USA F25 Futures in Edwardsville, Ill., alongside Connor Smith.
This week, Krajicek earned a place in the US Open Doubles Main Draw alongside fellow American Ryan Harrison. Earlier this summer, the left-hander advanced to the Citi Open doubles draw after a pair of qualifying victories along with a win in the qualifying draw at Wimbledon.
The Aggies are looking forward to another successful year after the team finished the 2015-16 season ranked No. 14 in the ITA poll. The Maroon and White return to the courts this fall with an impressive slate of tournaments including the ITA All-American in Tulsa and ITA Indoor Championships in New York.
