COLLEGE STATION, Texas - Texas A&M has reached an agreement in principle with Men's Tennis Head Coach Steve Denton on a new contract extension, Director of Athletics Scott Woodward announced Thursday. The Texas A&M University System Board of Regents authorized University President Michael K. Young to negotiate and execute Denton's contract at its meeting earlier today.
Â
"We are excited to announce that Coach Denton will remain in Aggieland and I appreciate the Regents and President Young working to ensure our continued success in men's tennis," Woodward said. "We have a tremendous team of coaches here at Texas A&M and Coach Denton continues to build champions on and off the court."
Â
Texas A&M will extend Denton's existing contract through the 2021 season. Denton has led Texas A&M to a 208-96 record in 10 seasons in Aggieland. Over the past decade the Maroon & White have advanced to at least the second round of the NCAA Tournament each season, including a trio of appearances in the Sweet 16 and a trip to the 2015 Elite Eight. Additionally, the Aggies have claimed a pair of SEC Tournament titles as well as the 2015 SEC regular season crown.
Â
"Heading into my 11th season in College Station and the Texas A&M administration continues to be so supportive of me and our program," Denton said. "I look forward to continuing to lead the Texas A&M tennis program for many years and I think our best tennis has yet to come."
Â
The Aggies are looking forward to another successful year after the team finished the 2015-16 season ranked No. 14 in the ITA poll. The Maroon & White return to the courts this fall with an impressive slate of tournaments including the ITA All-American in Tulsa and ITA Indoor Championships in New York.
