VERONA, N.Y. – Led by two players atop the individual leaderboard, the Texas A&M men's golf team owns first place after 36 holes at the season-opening Turning Stone – Tiger Intercollegiate.
Â
The Aggies (279-287=566, -10) maintain a seven-stroke edge over tournament host Missouri (-3) following two rounds on the Kaluhyat Course with the tournament set to conclude at the end of a final 18 holes on Monday morning. During the final round, Texas A&M is slated to tee off at 7 a.m. (CT) alongside both Missouri and Toledo.
Â
"I'm really happy with the way we played today," Texas A&M head coach J.T. Higgins said. "To go into the first 36 holes of a tournament having played only one practice round on the course and shoot as low as we did, especially in the first round, was fantastic."
Â
Aggie sophomore Chandler Phillips (66-72=138) and junior Kavan Eubank (65-73=138), who is playing in his first tournament for the Maroon & White after transferring from California Baptist, lead the player standings at six-under par. The duo paces Toledo's Thomas Thurloway and Missouri's Trevor Ullestad by four strokes in the chase for individual medalist honors.
Â
"I'm really fired up about this team," Higgins added. "Top-to-bottom we were solid, starting with Chandler. He's really a great leader and turning into one of our most reliable players and for Kavan to go out and shoot a 65 during his first round as an Aggie is pretty special."
Â
Junior Cameron Champ (74-69=143, -1) fired the low round of the afternoon with a 69 to sit in a tie for fifth place on the leaderboard while Viraj Madappa (74-78=125, +8) is in 33rd place and Andrew Paysse (82-73=155, +11) in 46th round out the Texas A&M lineup.
Â
"Overall, today was a really good effort and gives us a chance to get a win right off the bat this season," Higgins concluded. "We're in great position, we just need to go out and take care of business tomorrow."
