BIRMINGHAM, Ala. --- Texas A&M redshirt freshman center Erik McCoy's impressive playing debut last Saturday against No. 16 UCLA was rewarded with SEC Offensive Lineman of the Week honors on Tuesday.
Â
McCoy, from Lufkin High School, helped lead a rebuilt Aggie offensive front that cleared the way for 442 total yards in the 31-24 overtime win over the Bruins. McCoy was the linchpin for all 83 offensive snaps as the Aggies used a balanced attack with 203 rushing yards and 239 passing yards.
Â
The Aggies' offensive front had combined for just 14 career starts entering the UCLA game, with senior tackle Avery Gennesy accounting for 13 of them. McCoy was one of three first-time starters on the offensive line, but the group played like seasoned veterans allowing zero sacks, one QB hurry and just two plays with negative yardage.
Â
Also receiving kudos for his strong play against UCLA was senior strong safety Justin Evans (Wiggins, Miss.), who was named National Defensive Player of the Week by College Sports Madness. Evans grabbed a pair of interceptions, contributed eight tackles and had the game-winning broken-up pass on the final play of Saturday's battle.Â
