After Math: Prairie View A&M

Dive inside the numbers of the shutout win over Prairie View with the latest edition of "After Math".

Each Monday, 12th Man Productions' Will Johnson takes you inside the numbers of the weekend's game with "After Math".

What did Saturday's win over Prairie View A&M amount to?

Nothing.

Now, don't take that as some slight to the opponent, or how the Aggies were expected to win easily.  It added up to zilch because John Chavis and the Texas A&M defense put up its second shutout in the last five games.  So the 'nothing' comment is not at all a slight—it's high praise.

A&M didn't allow Vanderbilt to score a single point last November, then did the same to the Panthers on Saturday.  Prior to this current stretch, the Aggies hadn't shut any one out since 2004.

Safety Justin Evans continues to play at a high level. He was in for just a little over two quarters, but still made an impact. He broke up two passes and blocked a field goal.  Evans has made 13 tackles this season (second on the team). But in a little more than 6 quarters of action he's intercepted 2 passes, broken up 3 (including on the final play against UCLA to preserve the win) and blocked a field goal.

Evans is everywhere.

Offensively, the Aggies had over 600 total yards for the 14th time in the Kevin Sumlin era.

This wasn't really about stats though. Therefore, what does it add up to?

The Aggies knew they'd been through a rugged fracas with UCLA, and that they had another one on the horizon at Auburn. So could they focus in on what came between? Sumlin had the chance to learn something about his team Monday through Friday last week.

"People take it the wrong way when we say 'It's About Us'," explains the head coach. "It's not an arrogant thing. It's about us getting better."

This was a week his team needed to take day by day, improving upon each.

"No matter who the opponent is, I think this team has a respect for each other, and what the standard is," Sumlin says. "They want to take the next step. Practice last week was fabulous."

The Aggies handled it, and they're 2-0 as they pack their bags. Auburn, Arlington and Columbia, for the Tigers, Razorbacks and Gamecocks, in the next three weeks. A rugged road through the Southeastern Conference, without the comforts of home. How will A&M handle this new test?

It starts on 'The Loveliest Little Village on the Plains' Saturday night. Make no mistake, that quaint moniker is full of deception. Once the War Eagle flies at Jordan-Hare Stadium only hostilities await.

It's time for real focus and intensity from the Aggies.

It's time for some SEC Football!
