COLLEGE STATION, Texas – Off to an impressive start to the 2016-17 season, Texas A&M junior Cameron Champ has been named to the watch list for the Haskins Award by Golfweek assistant editor Brentley Romine.
Â
The Haskins Award presented by Stifel is given annually to the best college player, as voted by players, coaches and media. Haskins Award winners over the years include such notable future professionals as Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, Luke Donald, Graeme McDowell and Hunter Mahan.
Â
Champ, who battled injuries during the start of his career in Aggieland, emerged as one of Texas A&M's most consistent golfers last season as he led the squad with a 72.82 scoring average while carding four top-10 placings and appearing at the NCAA Championship as an individual.
Â
The Sacramento, Calif., native has been a force during the Aggies' first two tournaments this season, producing a pair of top-10 finishes with three of his six total rounds coming at par or lower. Champ opened his junior campaign with a tie for ninth at the Turning Stone-Tiger Intercollegiate before returning to the links and carding his first career individual victory at last weekend's OFCC/Fighting Illini Invitational, which featured some of nation's top golfers.
Â
Champ and his Aggie teammates are back in action Sept. 30-Oct. 2 when they travel to Spirit Hollow Golf Course in Burlington, Iowa, for the Golfweek Conference Challenge.
