Aggies Off to Strong Start at Golfweek Conference Challenge

Sophomore Chandler Phillips holds a share of the lead at the GolfWeek Conference Challenge as the No. 16 Texas A&M men's golf team sits in second place after the event's opening round.

BURLINGTON, Iowa – Sophomore Chandler Phillips holds a share of the lead at the GolfWeek Conference Challenge as the No. 16 Texas A&M men's golf team sits in second place after the event's opening round.

In pursuit of his first individual championship, Phillips (66, -4) carded a bogey-free round on the par-72, 7,179 yard Spirit Hollow Golf Course, marking his fifth consecutive below-par opening round. The Huntsville, Texas, native sits in a three-way tie at the top of a crowded leaderboard, with seven golfers within one shot of the lead. Phillips looks to bring home the Aggies' third individual crown in three tries on the young season.

"Chandler played one of the best rounds of his career so far," Texas A&M head coach J.T. Higgins said. "He was really solid keeping the ball in play and giving himself lots of opportunities to put a good score on the board. Nice to see him get off to a great start."

As a team, the Aggies (283, -5) are within five strokes of tournament leaders San Jose State (278, -10) after seeing three golfers shoot below par during the opening round. They will be paired with Spartans on Saturday along with third place McNeese State (285, -3).

"I like what I saw today," added Higgins. "I thought we did really well today putting four guys in contention and under par for most of the day. We had a tough break coming down the stretch that cost us a few shots, but second place is not bad with a lot of golf left to be played. We'll be looking to get even better moving into the weekend."

Junior Kavan Eubank (71, -1) opened the tournament with a one-under performance putting him in a tie for ninth that includes sophomore Max Miller (71, -1), who birdied the final hole to conclude the day in the red. Junior Cameron Champ sat below par most of the day until a triple on the 16th put him in a share of 24th place. Rounding out the lineup, freshman Josh Josh Gliege (79, +7) sits in a tie for 54th after his first round as an Aggie.

The team will get back out on the course for the second round with a 9:50 a.m. tee time on Saturday. Live scoring for the final two rounds will be available at GolfStat.com. Stay tuned to 12thMan.com or follow the Aggies on Twitter (@AggieMensGolf).
