TULSA, Okla. – The Texas A&M men's tennis team opened pre-qualifying action at the 2016 Saint Francis Health System ITA Men's All-American Championships Saturday at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
Pre-qualifying matches will take place at the University of Tulsa's Case Center and Union High School, with qualifying matches starting Oct. 3 and main draw contests getting underway Oct. 6. The singles and doubles finals are scheduled for Oct. 10.
Sophomore Aleksandre Bakshi played his way into the third round with a pair of wins Saturday. The Tblisi, Georgia native, topped Ciro Lampasas of Louisville in three sets before besting sixth-seeded Calum MacGeoch of Drake in straight sets. Bakshi will take on Robert Dula of Eastern Washington at 9:00 a.m. Sunday.
Joining Bakshi in the third round will be freshman Hady Habib, the rookie defeated Ben Clark of Drake in straight sets before besting Alexander Lebedev of Notre Dame, 6-4, 6-2. The Houston, Texas native, will take on Michael Weindl of Old Dominion at 11:30 a.m. Sunday.
Senior Frankie Colunga topped Dylan Steffens of Illinois State before falling to Jimmy Bendeck of Baylor in the second round. Junior AJ Catanzariti advanced to the second round with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Guillem Sanchis of Eastern Kentucky, but suffered a 6-4, 2-6, 6-2 setback at the hands of Josef Dodridge of Wisconsin in the afternoon match. Sophomore Kevin Lam topped Santiago Salazar of Louisville 4-6, 7-6(5), 6-4 in the first round before falling to Nick Stachowiak of Duke. Senior James Martell was defeated 6-1, 7-6(11) by Austin Rapp of UCLA in the first round, Martell will take on Ricardo Almeida of Eastern Washington at 11:00 a.m. in the pre-qualifying consolation draw.
Pre-qualifying competition will continue through Sunday as winners will advance to the Qualifying Draw beginning on Monday. Junior Jordi Arconada and senior Max Lunkin will begin participation in Tulsa on Monday, along with the doubles teams of Arconada/Catanzariti and Habib/Bakshi.
