PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif. – The Texas A&M doubles team of Rutuja Bhosale and Rachel Pierson came within one win of reaching the main draw at the Riviera/ITA All-American Championships, but they were eliminated in the quarterfinals of the qualifying draw after falling to Jasmine Lee and Lisa Marie Rioux of Mississippi State, 8-6, Wednesday at the Riviera Tennis Club.
Bhosale and Pierson had won five consecutive matches, winning their first three matches to advance out of the pre-qualifying doubles draw and winning the first two matches in the qualifiers to reach the quarterfinals, with the winner earning a berth in the main draw.
Bhosale and Pierson also competed in the qualifying singles draw. Bhosale, ranked No. 45 in the nation in singles, won her first-round match, defeating 71st-ranked Maeva Razakasoa of Long Beach State, 6-4, 6-3. Bhosale was then eliminated with a 6-4, 6-4 loss to Sara Daavettila of North Carolina in the second round.
Pierson, who earlier had won three consecutive singles matches in the pre-qualifier to reach the qualifying draw, suffered a first-round loss and also lost in the first round of the consolation draw.
Texas A&M's Saska Gavrilovska, a career-high No. 15 in the Oracle ITA Women's National Singles Rankings, was selected to participate in the 32-player main draw. She begins competition against 10th-ranked and No. 7 seed Katarina Adamovic of Oklahoma State today at 1:30 p.m. (PT).
The Riviera/ITA Women's All-American Championship is the first national championship tournament of the 2016-17 season. The singles and doubles finals scheduled for Oct. 9.
Main draw singles semifinalists, main draw doubles finalists and main draw consolation champions will receive automatic entry into the 2016 USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships, Nov. 3-6 at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, New York.
