CORRECTED: Macarena Olivares (A&M) def. Palina Dubavets (UCSB), 7-5, 6-4 in first round of backdraw
MALIBU, Calif. – Texas A&M senior Rachel Pierson won a pair of singles matches in straight sets and also won a doubles match with senior partner Rutuja Bhosale to highlight the Aggies' first day of pre-qualifying draw competition at the Riviera/ITA Women's All-American Championships today at Pepperdine University.
Pierson, ranked No. 91 in the ITA preseason singles rankings, opened the 64-player singles draw with a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Mariana Gould of Georgia. Pierson then knocked off No. 8 seed Aliona Bolsova of Oklahoma State, 6-1, 6-2, in the second round.
Pierson will face the winner between Maureen Slattery of Denver and Angela Kulikov of USC, Sunday at 12:30 p.m. (PT), with the winner of the third-round match advancing to the qualifying draw.
Texas A&M's two newcomers were not as fortunate as Macarena Olivares suffered a 6-0, 6-4 first-round loss to Ena Shibahara of UCLA, and Tina Bokhua fell to Sybille Gauvain of San Jose State, 6-4, 6-4, also in the first round. Olivares rebounded with a 7-5, 6-4 victory over Palina Dubavets of UC Santa Barbara in the first round of the singles backdraw, but Bokhua fell to Gabby Smith of USC, 6-1, 6-1.
In doubles, Pierson and Bhosale opened play by defeating Petra Horakova and Stefana Andrei of Louisiana Monroe, 8-3. They will face Hawaii's Marina Hruba and Petra Melounova in second-round action Sunday at 10:15 a.m. (PT).
Bokhua and Olivares fell to Anastasia Rychagova and Tess Bernard-Feigenbaum of Kansas, 8-6. The Aggie duo will play Hayley Thompson and Lena Pacholski of Long Beach State Sunday at 9 a.m. (PT) in the first round of the pre-qualfiying backdraw.
Main draw singles semifinalists, main draw doubles finalists and main draw consolation champions will receive automatic entry into the 2016 USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships, Nov. 3-6 at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, New York.
