Texas A&M’s Knight named SEC Midseason Offensive Player by CollegeFootballNews.com
Oct 10, 2016 | Football
First-year Texas A&M quarterback Trevor Knight has been named the Southeastern Conference Midseason Offensive Player by CollegeFootballNews.com
Knight, from San Antonio, Texas, has helped lead the Aggies, who were unranked in the preseason polls, to a 6-0 record and a No. 6 ranking in both the Associated Press and Amway Coaches top 25 polls.
"Think of it this way – he's the SEC Midseason MVP," the staff at CollegeFootballNews.com wrote.
The Aggies are 6-0 for the first time in more than 20 years dating back to 1994 when A&M won its first seven games and finished the year with an undefeated 10-0-1 record. The Aggies have already beaten three teams ranked in the AP Top 25 – No. 16 UCLA, No. 17 Arkansas and No. 9 Tennessee, and Texas A&M is the only team in the AP Top 25 with five wins against Power 5 opponents.
The dual-threat Knight is one of just two players in the Football Bowl Subdivision with at least 1,500 passing yards and 500 rushing yards to his credit (the other is Louisville's Lamar Jackson). Knight ranks No. 8 nationally with 2,002 total yards and he averages 7.2 yards per play. Knight has received some type of weekly honor after four games this season, and he's been earned national weekly honors twice (Davey O'Brien National QB of the Week after Arkansas, Walter Camp National Offensive POTW after Tennessee).
CollegeFootballNews.com also ranked the top 10 players of the first half of the 2016 season and three Aggies were on the list:
1. QB Trevor Knight, Sr. Texas A&M
2. QB Jalen Hurts, Fr. Alabama
3. LB Zach Cunningham, Jr. Vanderbilt
4. DE Derek Barnett, Jr. Tennessee
5. SS Justin Evans, Sr. Texas A&M
6. RB Trayveon Williams, Fr. Texas A&M
7. QB Chad Kelly, Sr. Ole Miss
8. DE Jonathan Allen, Sr. Alabama
9. DE Arden Key, Soph. LSU
10. TE Evan Engram, Sr. Ole Miss
