Oct 14, 2016 | Soccer
OXFORD, Mississippi – The Texas A&M Aggies let a 1-0 lead slip away late in the second half, dropping a 2-1 decision to the Ole Miss Rebels Friday evening.
Texas A&M claimed the lead in the 53rd minute with Emily Bates scoring her third goal of the season, including her first since returning to the lineup following an injury. Ashlynn Harryman started the sequence 10 yards on the offensive side of the center stripe, knocking a pass out to Haley Pounds who needed just two steps to find Bates breaking into the box at the right corner. Bates had a one-v-one from 10 yards at the near post, shooting into the far corner to break the scoring seal.
The Aggies held the lead for 23 minutes before Ole Miss took advantage of a set piece in the 76th minute. Bella Fiorenzo took a free kick from four yards off the end line to the left of penalty box. She sent a shot in with a meeting of the clans muddying up the six-yard box. Aggie keeper Danielle Rice was shielded from the shot, but recovered to make what appeared to making a punching save. The shot was deemed to cross the line for the equalizer.
Ole Miss (9-7-0, 4-4 SEC) took the lead in the 83rd minute when CeCe Kizer found an opening at the top of the box and was able to sneak a shot between a leaping Rice and the crossbar for the game-winning goal.
The final score belied the flow of play as the Aggies outshot Texas A&M 18-9 and owned a 7-3 edge in corner kicks. But missed opportunities Texas A&M, including not converting on three penalty kicks in the first five minute of the second half.
The squads went into the intermission knotted at 0-0 despite the Maroon and White owning the advantages in shots (9-4), shots-on-goal (5-2) and corner kicks (5-2). Ole Miss goalkeeper Marnie Merritt made five saves to keep the Aggies off the scoreboard. Rice made two saves to keep the Rebels scoreless, including a diving punching parry on a shot by Kizer to stop Ole Miss' best scoring opportunity in the stanza.
Texas A&M (7-7-1, 2-5-1 SEC) pressed the issue late in the first half with Haley Pounds ripping a shot in the 38th minute and Brittany Crabtree sending a pair of missiles goalward in the 40th minute, but Merritt was up to the task on all three occasions.
The Aggies return to action Thursday as they host the Kentucky Wildcats in a 6:30 pm contest at Ellis Field.

On the match…
"This is one that is hard to handle. We did everything right for most of the match to be in a position to win. We got Emily (Bates) back into the offense and in her limited action she was able to produce a goal. Then we were able to get other things going on the offensive end. But once again we were unable to finish our chances. And then we make two bad mistakes on defense in the last 15 minutes and Ole Miss took advantage of them, so they got the three points from this match.
