Texas A&M’s Pierson, Bhosale set for ITA All-American Qualifying Round

MALIBU, Calif. – Texas A&M senior Rachel Pierson has advanced to the Riviera/ITA Women's All-American Championships qualifying draw in both singles and doubles. She moves on from the pre-qualifying draws after winning a round of 16 singles match and winning doubles matches in both the round of 16 and quarterfinals with Aggie senior Rutuja Bhosale today at Pepperdine University.
Pierson is one of eight players to proceed from the 64-player pre-qualifying singles draw to the qualifying draw, having defeated Maureen Slattery of Denver, 6-1, 6-2, in the round of 16. It was the third consecutive straight-set victory for Pierson, who opens the 64-player qualifying draw against Pepperdine's Ashley Lahey on Tuesday at 10:45 a.m. (PT) at the at the Riviera Tennis Club in Pacific Palisades, California. Lahey also advanced out of the pre-qualifying draw with three straight-set victories.
Bhosale, No. 45 in the ITA preseason singles rankings, begins singles competition in the qualifying draw Tuesday as she faces 71st-ranked Maeva Razakasoa of Long Beach State at 10:45 a.m.
In doubles, Person and Bhosale defeated Marina Hruba and Petra Melounova of Hawaii, 8-4 in the pre-qualifier round of 16 and held off Rianna Valdes and Jessica Failla of USC, 8-5 in the quarterfinals to be one of four teams to advance to the 32-player qualifying draw. The Aggie tandem opens the qualifying doubles draw against 49th-ranked Shannon Hudson and Ana Oparenovic of Arkansas, Tuesday at 9 a.m.
In other doubles action, Texas A&M's Tina Bokhua and Macarena Olivares completed competition with a tightly contested 8-7 (4) setback to Hayley Thompson and Lena Pacholski of Long Beach State University in the pre-qualifying consolation draw.
The Riviera/ITA Women's All-American Championship is the first national championship tournament of the 2016-17 season. Main draw contests get underway Oct. 6 at the Riviera Tennis Club in Pacific, with the singles and doubles finals scheduled for Oct. 9.
Main draw singles semifinalists, main draw doubles finalists and main draw consolation champions will receive automatic entry into the 2016 USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships, Nov. 3-6 at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, New York.
