COLLEGE STATION – The Texas A&M Softball team opened the fall season with a victory in game one, 3-2, and a tie in game two, 0-0, against the National Professional Fastpitch League's USSSA Pride, Tuesday evening, at the Aggie Softball Complex.
"I am really proud of the team and how we competed today," head coach Jo Evans said. "We got the win and we had the opportunity to win the second one right down to the wire. It could be a game where you get so wide-eyed about competing against people you've watched your entire life. It could take you out of your game, but it really didn't. I thought our kids handled it well. I'm really proud of the way our kids played. Also, I was just impressed by the way the Pride handled themselves and the way they play the game. I want our kids to notice that and emulate that maturity on the field."
In game one, sophomore Samantha Show led off the third inning with a solo homerun over the left field wall. Junior Erica Russell followed with a one-out solo shot to double the Aggie lead.
In the fifth inning, the Pride tied the game with a two-run homer from Lauren Chamberlain.
Texas A&M regained the lead in the sixth inning after a base hit by junior Ashley Walters. Sophomore Kaitlyn Alderink reached on an error and advanced to third on a walk to Tori Vidales and a throwing error by the catcher. Walters delivered the go-ahead run with a one-out single to shallow centerfield, giving the Aggies a 3-2 advantage.
Show earned the win with an impressive one-hit, four-strikeout performance in six innings of work. Junior Trinity Harrington picked up the save, allowing just one hit and recording a strike out in the final frame.
In the nightcap, the two teams tied at zero after seven innings.
Junior Lexi Smith, made her Aggie debut, tossing four innings, while recording three strikeouts and allowing six hits and zero runs. In the first inning, the Pride threatened, loading the bases with no outs, but the Temple College transfer ended their rally with three-straight strikeouts.
The Aggies return to action on Thursday, October 27th with a doubleheader against Blinn Junior College at the Aggie Softball Complex at 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. Admission is free.
